Rushdie’s ‘Satanic Verses’ hits Indian bookshelves after four decades • FRANCE 24 English

As Salman Rushdie’s stabbing trial in the US grabs international headlines, in the celebrated author’s native India, bookstores are now selling “The Satanic Verses” four decades after India became the first country to ban the book. The ban was not lifted over freedom of speech concerns, but due to bureaucratic ineptitude.

  1. Vikatan magazine cartoon was banned by the same govt few days back for criticising modi.every govt come up with their own definition of "freedom of expression".whether congress or bjp.

  2. Good. Although the govt now is busy censoring other types of content mostly on the internet. May after 30 yrs that too will be let go by the freedom loving govts that we always have.

  3. 🚨In the Meanwhile, Salman Rushdie's assailant has been unanimously convicted by the Jury in USA🇺🇸 Courts👍✅

  4. Indian leftist are actually Islamist rightwing, support silently supression of voices against islamic mal practices like early marriage, blasphemy and polygamy.

  5. Nice .this is true freedom of speech.i wonder how the so called left liberals and secular banned the book in India.

  6. The Congress party, when they were in the government , banned the book in the country only to appease the Muslim community….😮😮😮

  7. Yeah, sure! What next, I wonder. Can we get proper beef items at McDonald's and such because we Christians respect and partake in the glorious majesty that is beef by joyously eating its juicy meat and drinking it nutritious milk, never ever its urine or dung, y'know…oh, and we lluuvvv pork!

Be wise enough to see that all this is just shameless, senseless propaganda. India will never have religious freedom, just as Pakistan will never have women walking about showing their properly combed and tied hair. What a joke! The word secular being in her constitution itself is a constant source of frustration for her self-proclaimed 'majority' who doth reeketh of body odour, pungent spices and addicted to cow dung and urine as LSD to crackheads in LA (nor can they speak a lick of proper English).

  8. Khangress party banned the book to hide truth from public, sadly for them in the age of social Media the truth came out …..shame of Khangress Buslim Party

  9. read the chapter Mahound. it's beautiful in every aspect. The opposite of faith is not necessarily 'reason'; that would be too binary. The opposite of faith, as Salman Rushdie writes in The Satanic Verses, is doubt. It is doubt that compels us to think through things and examine evidence before arriving at a conclusion."
