Scottish Tories propose 14 years old for school leaving age

  1. …into further education or apprenticeships.  To be fair to them here.

They have a similar scheme in England for 16 year olds but there’s nothing up here.

  2. I am a teacher. There are many, many pupils who are capable but not academically inclined whom this policy would serve. Teenagers who could be out learning a trade or doing work they see as meaningful are forced into doing thirty-odd periods a week of stuff they view as pointless, and, consequently, they are more likely to act up, dragging time away from others.

It’s getting dismissed because it’s a Tory idea, but it is perfectly sensible one.

  3. A 15 year old can attend college, instead of school already. That was offered to me.

  4. The biggest flaw in the current system is the Christmas leavers. There’s always a group of kids who reach fifth year, too young to leave school in the summer but no intention of staying. This wastes everyone’s time. If they were suggesting that pupils were eligible to leave school after 4 years of secondary education (no matter their age at the end of fourth year), I’d get that. But having kids leave school before S3 is too early imo.

  5. Cheap labour to replace the people tories want out.

  6. An uneducated population is easier to manipulate.

School shouldn’t just be about how kids can be productive members of the capitalist machine. We need to rethink education to be more than that.

I was aghast at my 15 years olds S5 course choices – an option to study “barista skills” as a course choice alongside the likes of history, physics and graphics design.

14 is far to young to be making this call and this stinks as a way to give employers a chance to exploit kids at a young age.

  7. Sorry the same party that raised school leaving age to 18 in England and Wales wants to lower it to 14 in Scotland?

Yeah I haven’t read the article.

I assume would actually be something more like vocational qualifications which people are actually allowed to be paid for. But could be wrong.

  8. Aye and stick them on the front lines in Ukraine. Fucking tories, bunch of ghouls.

Labour aren’t much better, taking billions from the benefits system instead of taxing the 1% absolute horrible society we are living in!

  9. This is one of the rare occasions the Tories actually come up with a sensible idea. My colleague’s daughter literally suffered through the last year of school, she’d go awol, my colleague was forever getting calls from the school about her behaviour etc. She’s now training to be a sparky and absolutely loves it, loves making her own money, works every opportunity she gets and is so much happier. She’s certainly not stupid, but school simply wasn’t for her.

  10. The less educated you are, the more likely you are to vote for the Tories. Smart!

  11. I’m nowhere near a fan of the tories but I’m not opposed to this *if* at the same time they start opening up vocational education and colleges to the same age. My fifteen year old is leaving school in summer, Glasgow bound for nautical college and I’ve got a couple of nieces who also have went/aiming to go the vocational route in hairdressing and beauty as well as a nephew apprenticing under my brother as a joiner that this would probably have benefitted.

Kids that aren’t academic and aren’t uni bound are often left on the scrapheap by highschools who are only interested in the ones that will go to uni with no practical skills for their vocation of choice unless they get experience off their own back outwith school and often only if they have someone in the family or know someone connected to the industry. My son spent the last summer holidays in Shetland with my second cousin working on the ferries (well ’work experience’ as it were) to get into his course on an unconditional offer but it shouldn’t have to be this way.

  12. Work for a large engineering company that takes on apprentices and we have moved to taking on older apprentices at 18+ due to a lack of maturity and appreciation from one’s fresh out 4th year just turned at 16. A lot of the younger ones seen it as an extension of school while older teenagers realise it’s an opportunity for a career and are more focused.

  13. So they don’t have to pay out as much family allowance?

I left school at 16 and although I’ve got a fairly good job I do regret not staying on and then going to uni. I argued so hard with my parents about it.

  14. I take it the retirement age will be pushed up a little at the same time to 80 years of age.

  15. 14 year olds can legally work 2 hours a day during term time Sun to Fri and 5 hours on a Sat up to a max of 12 hours a week.

So what apprenticeships are these 14 year olds meant to get when they can work 10 hours max during the week?

  16. Fucking Tories, it’s like they’re competing to come up with the stupidest ideas.

  17. With all the focus on Trump recently I had forgotten all about just how stupid and weird the Tories could also be.

    Thanks for the reminder 🙂

  18. My nine year old does at time, but it doesn’t make it right.

  19. Make high schools better, start teaching a properly holistic education and real critical thinking.
The sheer numbers that will fall through the cracks with earlier leaving ages would be terrible.
I cannot entirely take the idea of ‘an uneducated public is an easily manipulated public’ off the table with this one, even if there will be benefits for some that school doesn’t agree with.

  20. They will be sending kids back up chimneys given half a chance, I thought Dross was bad but this fuckin clown takes the biscuit

  21. Are Tories following US Republican Party playbook of ensuring an uneducated population to manipulate? Too many people are leaving UK/Scottish schools unable to read or write.

  22. When I was in S2/S3 I was dead set on becoming a hairdresser, Im now studying at Uni to be a biomedical engineer.
14 years old is nowhere near old enough to start making decisions of that caliber – i didn’t even know what subjects I wanted to take!
