The 4.38% of the nation who voted for Labour in the 2020 election will no doubt have some feelings about this.
Labour Party: Alan Kelly is resigning, who do we make party leader to help turn the party around?
Also Labour Party: How about Ivana Bacik, she is immensely unpopular with the voting public having won only 1 election in over 20 year, which was largely a protest vote against Fine Gael but surely she is the right candidate.
They’re doomed.
What do we think of the conspiracy theory that this is a prelude to a SocDem merger?
I like it, because I like conspiracy theories that are harmless and it DOES make sense that Bacik would be much more palatable to the SDs than Kelly was.
Everyone except Labour and SocDem voters thinks that a merger would make sense. But perhaps that’s just why the conspiracy “feels” right?!
It comes up every so often that Labour and Soc Dems should merge.
I don’t really see why. At the rate Labour are going, the Soc Dems just need to sit back and watch more and more of the Labour faithful change allegiance to them. As a party it’s hard to see Labour surviving without some major changes which don’t look likely.
Is this the final nail in the coffin? It’s going to be embarrassing when the leader loses their seat. LOL.
That’s the youthful energy the Labour Party needs!
That party should have been dead 10 years ago, trust me that’s not a compliment.
I don’t generally hate anyone or anything, but I fucking hate labour.
Actually heard someone from the Labour Party refer to her as “the new generation of politicians” on NT the other day.
I think the labour party may be ever so slightly out of touch……..
Hahaha, the champagne labour party. Its brilliant because itll relegate them to even more obscurity
I think Labour are really trying to find anyone that doesnt have the stink of government on them. In the parliamentary party that leaves her and Seán Sherlock. This is an interesting move, I dont think she will lose her seat come election time but it could be touch and go.
An uncontested election is never a good look. And if Kelly is tainted by association, I’m pretty sure Bacik – one of the infamous Zappone 50 – isn’t going to be perceived as anything less than a fully signed up champagne socialist.
I’m curious though now, has anyone done an analysis of leadership elections for the main parties? Do any of them host open elections?
Country crying out for a left wing option and labour is floundering around with a leader who could end up getting Michael McDowell’d.
They have the brand recognition and historical following that a remotely competent organisation could at least mount a challenge with. But as other posters have said they are nearly better off letting the party die at this stage.
Honestly an absolute farce. The sad thing is this country is crying out for a large left leaning party that young people could get behind, Labour could fit the bill if the people in the party weren’t so incompetent. Alan Kelly was an egomaniac who I was glad to see the back of but they’ve somehow managed to appoint a worse successor. It’s a shame Duncan Smith didn’t run for Labour leader because I actually think he’d have been a better candidate.
I cannot wait for when local labour wannabes knock my door when out canvassing. I’ll be asking where is the champagne. This woman is the definition of an entitled champagne socialist
I can think of no one worse to lead Labour.. Many encounters with this faux Labour leader over the years but most notably during Seanad elections and I was not impressed. The leafy suburb Labour voters will love their token socialist.
Yawn
Ivana say something here but it’s gone to the Bacik of my head
Didn’t Alan Kelly resign so that the party could go in a new direction? Only for them to choose more of the same…
The Labour party is still a thing? Christ.
What I said when she was caught at that drinks party in the Merrion:
>Bacik is an example of one of the worst strains of politician: the liberal social justice supporter whose supposed strong convictions crumble when she sees the pomp and ceremony the boy’s club have arranged for the elite. What practically all of labour have turned into, real life champagne socialists. I find it funny how the oldest Labour Party in the world has become so utterly entwined with the status quo and neoliberalism that nobody in it would dare to call themselves the dirty S-word anymore.
The labour party continues to dig the hole it got into ever deeper and deeper.
Nail. Coffin.
Ah yes, nothing says electable like Ivana Bacik. This will surely turn the Labour Party around.
Honestly do they really believe they will win votes with this, how disconnected can you be.
What’s that? You think the Labour Party are out of touch with working class issues and too focused on liberal middle class social campaigns?
Well here’s Ivana Bacik to change your mind.
Full blown SJW except most SJW nutters are sex-positive.
