HARTFORD, Conn. (WFSB) – Lawmakers from both parties planned to gather on Thursday to address the issue of high electricity costs in the state.
While there is widespread agreement that residents are paying too much for energy, the proposed solutions from Democrats and Republicans differ.
Both sides are set to present their plans in public meetings on Thursday to debate on how to lower energy rates.
The first meeting was scheduled at 10 a.m., hosted by Democrats.
Their proposal focused on cutting electricity rates by investing in new nuclear and offshore wind energy projects within the state, as well as exploring natural gas savings.
The Democrats argue that their plan provides long-term energy solutions and reduces costs for residents.
Republicans planned to hold their own meeting at 10:30 a.m. to present their alternative proposal.
The GOP suggests that the main reason for high electricity bills is the public benefits charge, which they refer to as a “hidden tax.”
Their plan called for the removal of these charges, which they argue that it will lead to significant savings for homeowners.
While both sides share the goal of low energy costs, their proposed methods differ significantly.
The meetings, at the Legislative Office Building, are expected to create a charged atmosphere as lawmakers make their cases to the public.
Lawmakers hoped that Thursday’s discussions would help move the state closer to a solution for Connecticut’s high electricity costs.
