So I just sat in the train to Essen Hbf and as I sat down I found an iPad. I looked around at first to see if anybody came back or was searching for it. Then I googled what to do and decided to drop it off at the DB desk in Recklinghausen, cause I thought I had to change trains to Düsseldorf there and also I didn’t want to have the iPad with me longer. I didn’t see a conductor in the train either. Then as soon as I stood up and took the iPad, the owner came from the two seats further? He said “oh that’s mine, I just came from school and forgot it” as good as I could understand w my German. Afterwards I thought it’s weird and purposely didn’t walk to the train to ask, cause I figured the owner had already left and if they changed seats the would have noticed something missing within 30 minutes of me being in the train.
Is this a scam or a YouTube prank? I tried to turn the iPad on, but it didn’t work and then sometimes the screensaver did pop up and I saw a photo of a family. I feel as if he did it either on purpose to check, but it seems as if I wanted to take it and I wanted to drop it at the DB desk. Or if someone noticed I found it and I gave it to the wrong person.
Any ideas on here? I never travel by train so this is a weird first experience. I for sure would notice my iPad missing after 30 minutes.

I would tell the person to unlock it in front of my eyes or else i would bring it to the lost&found office.

No, you didn’t lose anything so how could it be a scam or a prank?
Sounds like the guy knew the iPad wasn’t yours and wanted to either (most likely) steal it or (less likely) take it to lost property himself because he thought you were stealing it.
They might have realised someone left it there, and lied to you just to get it.
Did you let the owner unlock it ?
If he could unlock it its his, if not maybe he watched the person who forgot it and waited to see what you would do with it.
When you cant switch it on I would have asked for ID and told the helpdesk then what happend.
Either way not your fault.
