Ukrainians naming wartime babies after ‘famous drones and anti-tank missile systems’

Ukraine’s justice ministry has released a list of non-standard names given to babies born since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in February 2022.

It says in the period from 2022 to 2025, 1,440 newborns with non-standard names were registered in the country.

These include names related to national resistance, historical figures and even “famous drones and anti-tank missile systems” that helped Ukrainians in the war.

For example, the popular names Jan-Javelin, Javelina and Javelina-Didem are all named after the American Javelin anti-tank missile system, which has played a key role in the defence of Ukraine in the initial stages of the war.

Similarly, the name Artur-Bayraktar is another combination inspired by the Turkish Bayraktar attack drone.

Myrolyub, a popular name for Ukrainian boys, symbolises the desire for peace.
