European parliament president Roberta Metsola has said it is ‘about damn time’ that European countries began making plans to increase defence spending and support for Ukraine ahead of a meeting of European heads of state in the wake of the Trump administration’s signalling that it will withdraw aid for Ukraine and Europe. Speaking in Brussels, Metsola said: ‘I think I’ll be a little bit more blunt than usual today … our message on this day of a special European Council on defence is that it is about damn time’
