  1. It’s useless now, NATO may just send troops to get rid of russians in ukraine, same thing

  2. It wouldn’t help at all because the European NATO countries are not willing (nor capable) of intervening in the war. This means that the security umbrella would not deter Russia and it would simply continue its war as before.

  3. I like the idea but how is that legally possible? Ukraine isn’t part of NATO. Also the US are still in the alliance (officially) so good luck convincing Trump.

  4. Wait…. why am I agreeing with Meloni. What the fuck has happened to the world.

  5. I really don’t like her political party, but Meloni is somehow doing a good job with foreign politics.

  6. Some of you have not deployed to a combat zone before nor have you seen the videos coming out of Ukraine. All of you here saying Article 5 protection should be utilized can right now go and fight alongside Ukrainians without it. Invoking Article 5 in this war would be a total disaster for humanity.

    This is crazy talk.

  7. Sooooo she’s proposing full scale war? I know it’s unpopular but I think Putin will use nuclear weapons if we did that now. And the US definitely would not back us up in a nuclear war… If she thinks Russia will agree to some kind of ceasefire where NATO troops are on the ground she’s dreaming

  8. I will never get Meloni. She’s so all over the place.

  9. Is that even possible or realistic? And even then, this could be considered political suicide.

  10. I swear I read a report that she told France that she was not putting boots in Ukraine

  11. This is an absolutely useless proposal. As it stands, Europe doesn’t have the overwhelming military edge to deal this out willy-nilly, especially not Italy with its roughly 1.6% GDP defense spending. Good luck convincing the US to agree to all this while its busy backstabbing Ukraine.

Europe’s energy needs to be spent on supporting Ukraine in tangible ways instead of pie-in-the-sky proposals like this, by solidifying security cooperation in Europe, picking up America’s slack in the intelligence space and by significantly increasing domestic production of military goods yesterday.

  12. Is this not just letting them join NATO? If there going to change the language of the document, then they might as well remove the clause that disallows countries in active wars from joining the league. That way, they could easily add any other countries that fall under the same category.

  13. NATO’s Article 5 is a collective defense agreement that states that an attack on one member country is considered an attack on all members. This means that all member countries will assist the attacked country, if necessary, using the means they deem necessary. This can include military force

You do see that this would in fact become a WW3 scenario. This would be actively asking for all countries to select a side and go to war. If the USA isn’t on the side of Ukraine then I think Europe might be in a pickle. Let us hope there is peace in Ukraine and we can pivot and focus on ending all active conflicts. Put humanity on a course of peace and prosperity. In 100 years our collective advancements mean we could get to space and beyond. Otherwise we end up waring and killing off each other. One serves humanity and the other seems to serve people in power.

  14. I don’t see how this goes anywhere since it just sounds like NATO membership without calling it that.

I think Ukraine should be in NATO, but just go ahead and put them in NATO for fucks sake. We’re only really in this pickle in the first place because France and Germany didn’t want to vote Ukraine in back in the 2010s, for fear of being cut off from Russian gas imports.

If Europe wants to legit help Ukraine, they’ve got to pick *some* time to commit to more of a war footing against Russia, or else they’re just blustering for a while before doing nothing. Ukraine is going to need more ground troops before long, not just money and equipment.

  15. I thought she was super fascist but then I read articles like [this](https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/italys-meloni-tells-her-party-there-is-no-room-fascism-its-ranks-2024-07-02/) I dunno if she’s just crossing her fingers behind her back but it seems she’s softened on the harder edges of the far right ideologies in the past couple of years.

Also when talking of Italy and fascism I can never help but post the most [supervillian looking building in history lol](https://static.scientificamerican.com/sciam/cache/file/088B7DA0-B128-4D82-858FEB02129498F6_source.jpg?w=1200)

  16. While this is a good idea she is living in another reality if she thinks this is possible.

  17. I wonder if Putin thought that all of nato was just a puppet of the USA and it never really dawned on him that a bunch of independent nations could work together to advance a collective interest.

  18. Europe needs to give security guarantee to Ukraine, Putin cant afford a war on the Finnish,Baltics, polish and Ukrainian border. His army would be spread too thin. Its a different matter if Ukraine falls and it frees up the 1m active soldiers.

  19. How the, what the, who the? Italy? Meloni? My mind reels.

  20. Putin is going to shit his pants. Watch him start making threats against Europe again.
