  1. *From Bloomberg News reporters Andrea Palasciano and Donato Paolo Mancini:*

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said Ukraine should be granted the security of NATO without the actual membership in the military alliance.

Speaking on the sidelines of a European Union leaders’ meeting in Brussels on Thursday, she said “we need to think about more durable solutions” than sending European peacekeeping troops to Ukraine.

Extending the provision of NATO’s Article 5 — the collective defense clause that commits members to protect each other — would be much more effective, she said.

  2. Long overdue but Donald won’t do it because Putin has him in his pocket.

  3. An interesting idea. Neither the US or Russia want Ukraine in NATO. This is more like Ukraine outside of NATO, more of an affiliate than full member. Perhaps this approach will gain traction, perhaps not. We shall see.

  4. I have two very stupid questions but ask for answers anyway.

What would happen if Ukraine literally sells a small stripe of land running from north to south just short of the current defense line to let’s say Germany. If Russia crosses over, wouldn’t the NATO alliance protection pact come into effect? What is most likely to happen in that scenario?

  5. I agree and you need to move fast Ukraine does not have long without it

  6. Not gonna happen because the security aspect from NATO is the reason that it was declined in the first place.

  7. She was supposed to be a nutty rightwinger. Pleasantly surprised.

  8. It’s crazy that the far-right parties in Europe are even standing against the U.S.

It goes to show how absolutely unhinged the Trumpf regime is.

  9. But the other day she said no to Italian forces helping uphold a peace pact if reached. Seems to be fou me tell to me.

  10. Alternatively, they could give Ukraine EU membership which also comes with security guarantees and the major EU members have discussed this.

  11. I’m constantly surprised by all this. Fair play to her. This isn’t the most popular thing she could do in Italy.

  12. Meloni is blowing smoke.

she can deploy the Italian army to Ukraine tomorrow morning if she wanted to. cause that is exactly what Article 5 allows her to do under her very own logic. in fact, there is no law holding back UK and France from making good on their promise to put “boots on the ground and planes in the air” in Ukraine either.

there is only 1 problem. Russia still has 5,500 nukes.

i have no problem with the Europeans exchanging nuclear strikes with Russia. but they should not expect the rest of the world to go along with their military adventures.

  13. Meloni is such an unexpected character. The way she is sticking with European values surprised me. Just shows you can’t just paint all conservative values with the American brush.

  14. I think it’s time to restructure NATO’s purpose to being a security umbrella against Russia and it’s allies. The US would and should not be part of it. You become pro- Russia then you have to leave.

  15. When Meloni seems benevolent when compared to Trump, you know the USA has biiiiig problem.

  16. Wow, this is a big turn around. Previously she said she would only support security coming from a UN peacekeeping mission.

  17. Well, before the U.S.A. gets even further up Russias behind, perhaps Putin falls out of a small window from a very far height. That is admittedly an awful lot of voodoo dolls needed. /s

  18. Meloni has really been the surprise package since being elected. Everyone thought she’d sell out Ukraine to Russia and she has been staunch in her support.

  19. Good for you Meloni. This is the moment where your legacy is being decided.

  20. I mean THANkS! But was that not the original deal with Ukraine though? Like wtf? Protect us from Russia. And we’ll always want to be in NATO (ie on Europe’s side) even if we can’t be. What’s all the gs confusion?

  21. Until they have some troops there, this feels like posturing. They don’t need NATO article V protections to send their own troops into Ukraine. I hope they prove my skepticism wrong.

  22. She is right. If Europe really want to seize the moment here – no more thoughts and prayers and sending you guys weapons. Come and stand with Ukraine and help them get their land back. Europe either smashes Russia today in Ukraine, or faces an emboldened Russia three years from now, once Ukraine has been completely destroyed.

The only way to send a real message to morons like Trump and Putin is not through diplomacy. It is through pain.

  23. Isn’t it just the Budapest memorandum then? We recognise your borders and we will assure you that we will help you defend them, seems pretty weak frankly

  24. What NATO security? USA is trying to annex Denmark and Canada. Will NATO intervene?

  25. She’s so hot. I heard a rumour she had a thing with Kaja Kallas

  26. What more does this country need to do to earn NATO entry? Fuck.

  27. A complete non-starter.

Is Europe’s strategy right now simply to throw as many ideas at the wall in the futile hope that Trump may change his half decade+ policy of fucking over Ukraine on Russia’s behalf?

  28. Italy’s military spending as a percentage of GDP was 1.54% in 2024. They should put their money where there mouth is and actually contribute to NATO.

  29. This is beyond meaningless. Surely amending the NATO treaty to compel defense of a non-member is more difficult than just admitting Ukraine?  Something that was already recently voted down by the US and Germany, among others. She, and every other EU leader, are all entirely capable of signing military defense pacts with Ukraine directly, no NATO membership required. Hell, the EU could march their collective militaries into Ukraine tomorrow if they wanted.  Or they could expedite EU membership for Ukraine. That would at least not need US approval.
