I will never not have sleep reducing anxiety over the MOT, and with a 14 year old motor it’s getting worse with every year.

What’s the stupidest thing your car has failed on?

  1. I just pay my garage for a MOT and Service. If anything goes wrong, they’re on the hook to make it right, book, and pay for my retest.

  2. The electric motor for adjusting my headlights had died on the driver side and I didn’t realise. Had to head home and wind it to zero with a screwdriver and get it passed. Fun times.

  3. Early morning MOT, rookie mistake. Hope they’re a morning person

  4. Just done mine last night an was shitting it because my headlight level sensor was fooked so I stuck in a new one and had to level the headlights myself using the wall trick as I didn’t have time to get them done (emergency MOT). Thankfully passed.
But I did have a MOT tester in Ballymena try to fail me years ago for daytime running lights saying they were slightly blue….(They were factory Audi grill lights 🤦🏻🤣

  5. Yet another example of how messed up NI is.

In England, just book a test 2 days before and you’re done, most garages can perform the MOT test.

And to counter the “but they’ll just pretend something is broken to rip you off”:

    1. You can just bring the car to a different garage to get it fixed, or use Halfords/AA to book the apt
    2. Our car has been failed for multiple pointless reasons in NI due to the tester having a bad day.

  6. Took mine last week and it failed. Guy told me there was a fracture to the subframe that needed fixed. Took it to the mechanic who couldn’t believe how understated the issue was. The whole subframe and rear axle are completely disintegrating

  7. MOTs should be scrapped for cars with a proven service records and road safety checks

My car isn’t going to explode if I get a yearly service, and during that yearly service they give my car an MOT check (which they do anyway) I shouldn’t have to take my car for an MOT

  8. I somehow managed to squeak near 2 years out of 1 MOT. Managed to get it taxed and insured in 2024 jusssst before the MOT from 2023 ran out. Got the MOT booked for middle of summer 2024, and just couldn’t be arsed going through with it so kept changing the date until last month. With the delays here meaning it was fine to drive as long as you had a date booked…..sure why not.

Already checked with the insurance that it was still fine to drive, and the car still got serviced and anything that needed sorted was carried out.

  9. Get the scary green monster off your dashboard. It’s bound to annoy the tester.
