The Justice Ministry’s Names Board has released the list of new names it approved or rejected in 2024.

There are more than 120,000 approved names in Finland. According to the law, all people need to have at least one first name, but no more than four first names are allowed.
The law also stipulates that a name — or their combination — cannot be harmful or offensive.
The Names Board deals with unclear cases regarding the appropriateness of a name. The final decision, however, rests with the Digital and Population Data Services Agency.
In 2019, Finland made efforts to loosen naming convention laws, creating more leeway for families with foreign backgrounds.
Last year, the board rejected more than 40 names, including Velociraptor, Uncle, Entropy and Mimers. It also approved dozens of new names, like Hamwar, Ecthelion, Piina and Zuge.
