Poland knows. And I’m grateful we have them as allies and neighbors. They don’t rely on hope.
Finnaly we can achieve Wałęsa’s dreams regrading dealing with the Russians
Fuck em up Poland.
YES!
Unfortunately, there is NO high road to take here. And it sucks.
Go Poland, if Germany is too much of a pussy to acquire nukes now it’s on you to step up.
Good. Enough of this “being the bigger person” bullshit.
Our adversaries don’t follow the treaties so clearly the treaty failed – and hence no reason for it to be followed.
“but our treaties” isn’t that helpful when your neighbor has nukes aimed at you and has been committing war crimes.
Nuclear Poland!
Nuclear anti personnel mines are the way to go
This agreement and similar ones were created under the impression that all conflicting nations would follow the spirit of the Geneva Convention. Countries that signed up genuinely believed that the time of barbaric wars had ended and that we were marching towards a more civilized future.
Thanks to Russia, this dream is gone now.
It may come back or may not. Until then, every nation needs to be prepared for the worst possible outcomes. Leaving that treaty is a good decision. In case of war, the other side won’t retain itself, won’t show mercy or any basic human behavior, but will do anything to destroy you. So yeah, unfortunately, this is what it is
Cluster Munitions, Anti-Personnel Mines Conventions and NPT are good ideas but ONLY IF everyone abides by them. If your potential enemy or enemies doesn’t abide by them, then it’s like bringing only a knife to a gun fight because you signed the “no firearm treaty”.
When Russia has withdrawn from conventions and/or blatantly violates them, what’s use for them?
He’s right. No country with the potential for aggression towards Europe is bound by this nonsense.
Depressing but inevitable. With the growing threats from both Washington and Moscow, Europe must rearm itself at all costs
Poland is taking the saying: “Geneva convention? More like geneva suggestion” to heart
A smart and unavoidable move. All EU armies should do the same for obvious reasons. Our rational and humanistic approach to everything, including warfare, has hit a brick wall of geopolitical reality. We can’t afford idealism anymore. Poland is approaching this from a logical perspective.
This is survival for Europe.
Good. Finland is also looking into resigning from Ottawa agreement and looking getting the mines back, maybe even before summer (todays headlines). We have already something similar to landmines, more nasty but more expensive. But Ukraine situation has shown that basic landmines still do fantastic job slowing down the attacker. They are not unproblematic, but neither is letting attacker proceed.
The only potential opponent of Poland and the Baltic states in the region is russia, which does not respect any rules and violates all norms of warfare
The biggest victim of the Ukraine war is non-proliferation, and the pussyfooting around against Russias red lines caused it.
Why would anyone not develop nukes if their nuclear neighbours can invade?
what is the source of this news?
Shit, we are growing balls finally.
I think we need nukes in all the biggest countries in Europe.
Wait a minute, I’m about 90% sure that Poland can use cluster munitions anyway because we didn’t sign anything
“Due to the immense threat posed to civilian populations by the use of cluster munitions, they are prohibited under international law according to the 2008 convention. This convention has been signed by 111 countries worldwide. **Notably, it has not been signed by Poland, the United States, Russia, Ukraine**. Among the producers of cluster munitions are the USA and Russia.
In Poland, it is manufactured by facilities belonging to the Bumar group.”
I think Denmark should leave Cluster Munitions and Anti-Personnel Mines Conventions too. We can make a new convention that is refined. The old school cluster bombs should still be banned. If 90-95-99,9 pct of ammunition’s explode it is good enough, something like that
Poland never signed the Convention on Cluster Munitions though, so no idea how Tusk want to withdraw from it… Nor have we ever disposed of the stockpile of cluster bombs developed and produced in Poland.
Understandable. The reason so many European and Asian countries did not develop nuclear weapons was became America told the free democratic countries they had their back. Now without that many nations will develop their own. Which now seems like a very good idea. What the US loses is a positive impact on the world stage, good friendly relations that actually enrich US coffers with favorable trade pacts on a global scale.
Wise move. When it comes to Russia it’s better to keep all options on the table.
Yes, do it! Nuclear reactors too! I love what Macron is doing, but know we all know every country needs its own missilies without remote OFF button.
Equally horrible AND necessary
Poland with nukes holy shit lets go
Poland with nukes. Literally no one would dare touch them. I like it.
I’d say we should work on nukes with Poland. German-Polish nukes, how does that sound?
If Poland builds nukes that is where russia stops
Good Job Donald… you actually made it…
These guys were the toughest guys from the Teutonic wars, Napoleon to WW2.
In other words thank god they’re on our side.
It is inevitable that Europe will become a strong nuclear power and this will happen with absolute certainty.
Focus on nuclear asap.
That’s the only thing a bully would understand.
One of the big outcomes of the war in Ukraine is that non-proliferation is dead.
Ukraine is the only country to have willingly given up its nukes in exchange for security. Look where it got it.
[Article on the matter](https://www.kyivpost.com/post/48475)
Playing by the rules doesn’t work against mafia-like states
Those who know Russia best should guide the EU in how to really stop them. We are lucky to have Poland so strongly against the Russian menace.
As a german thats all so surreal. Everyone in the EU want to increase their armies and weapons and everyone is happy when their neighbours get new tanks, drones and missiles.
My great-grandfather certainly wouldnt have been happy about more tanks in France and Poland lol.
Luckily times have changed.
Since Russia attacked Ukraine and especially in the last few weeks since this orange lunatic is sitting in the White house i feel more “european” than ever before.
Fuck Putin and fuck Trump
As all countries should. Current political situation shows that post-ww2 system does not work anymore. Only armed are protected.
Congradulations Trump, Krasnov probably doesn’t have the brain power to connect his actions to this
Conventions have good intentions, but it’s not realistic when facing an enemy like Russia.
The Russians have agreed to treaties for the sake of other gains – not for the sake of humanity or reducing suffering when nations do go to war. Looking at their societal suicide rates and how frequently political leaders are removed from the chessboard. I’d say they are a traumatised population still suffering from decades of hardship and it’s exactly where their leaders like them to be.
They will never take control of their government and fight for their own rights – a higher level of wellbeing. If they can’t help themselves. They are a risk to Europe and we must re-consider these matters.
I would say the convention and others like it should be a little more dynamic. What is acceptable across a battlefield should differ from what a front-line and critical defence should permit. The enemy will know that an area is mined and unsafe. It is their choice to enter that area. We also have technology to locate and remove devices that we didn’t before.
Finally one of our politicians is looking into the stuff that truly matters. Way too many international agreements from long gone era’s are crippling the EU’s defense.
I’m calling it now, Poland will be the first country to use Fat Man launchers.
Poland didn’t sign the Cluster Munition Convention in the first place.
I’m all for it. Time to get some nukes.
