U.S. President Donald Trump said Friday he is considering tariffs and sanctions on Russia as part of his efforts to end the war in Ukraine.
It is the first time Trump has publicly voiced any displeasure or placed any pressure on Russia and Russian President Vladimir Putin in relation to the war in Ukraine. Critics have accused Trump of being too friendly toward Putin and too adversarial toward Ukraine and U.S. allies.
“Based on the fact that Russia is absolutely ‘pounding’ Ukraine on the battlefield right now, I am strongly considering large scale Banking Sanctions, Sanctions, and Tariffs on Russia until a Cease Fire and FINAL SETTLEMENT AGREEMENT ON PEACE IS REACHED. To Russia and Ukraine, get to the table right now, before it is too late. Thank you!!!,” Trump said in a Truth Social post Friday.
It also comes a day after Trump indicated a U..S. pullback from NATO and hesitancy to defend Europe from potential Russian attacks and after he struck friendly and fraternal chords with Putin.
Trump was asked Thursday if the U.S. would fight or defend allies in the transatlantic alliance.
Trump said Thursday the U.S. wouldn’t defend or fight for NATO allies that don’t meet his thresholds for defense spending.
“Well, I think it’s common sense. If they don’t pay I’m not gonna defend them. No, I’m not gonna defend them,” Trump said.
The U.S. president said he voiced the same sentiment toward NATO during his first term.
“Are you current or are you delinquent,” Trump said of his transactional foreign policy approach.
Trump also questioned whether European allies would come to help the U.S.., ignoring NATO’s help after the 9/11 attacks and European and Canadian forces who fought in the U.S. wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.
“You know the biggest problem I have with NATO? I really, I mean, I know the guys very well. They’re friends of mine. But if the United States was in trouble, and we called them, we said, ‘We got a problem, France. We got a problem, couple of others I won’t mention.’ Do you think they’re going to come and protect us? They’re supposed to. I’m not so sure,” Trump said, doubting NATO allies.
Trump’s threat of sanction and tariffs against Russia also follow Putin saying Moscow has no intention of giving up lands it has seized since invading Ukraine in 2022.
Putin said Thursday Russia would only agree to end the war on its terms.
Up until today, all of the public pressure from Trump to end the war has been put on Ukraine.
Trump has cut off U.S. intelligence sharing with Ukraine, stopped military support for Kyiv in the war against invading Russian forces and could expel some Ukrainian war refugees in the U.S.
“We’re not looking to hurt anybody, we’re certainly not looking to hurt them, and I’m looking at that,” Trump said about the potential deportations of approximately 240,000 Ukrainian war refugees. “There were some people that think that’s appropriate, and some people don’t, and I’ll be making the decision pretty soon.
All that comes after Trump and U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance clashed with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy over his distrust of Putin and push for security guarantees as part of minerals deal with the U.S.
Montana’s Republican congressional delegation is pushing for Congress and Trump to ban Russian imports of platinum, palladium and other precious metals until the war is over.
Montana is the only U.S. state where palladium and platinum are mined.
Sibanye-Stillwater, the company who mines those metals in Montana, has cut jobs blaming Russian dumping of the materials,
Palladium is used to make catalytic converters in cars and trucks.
The minerals are not part of current war sanctions against Russia. The company also backs the Russian minerals ban sponsored by
Trump had also been weighing lifting sanctions against Russia and Russian oligarchs.
