After weeks of [distancing the U.S. from Ukraine,](https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/national-security/trump-pivots-russia-allies-weigh-sharing-less-intel-us-rcna194420) President Donald Trump on Friday threatened to impose expanded “large scale” sanctions and tariffs on Russia until it reaches a peace agreement with Ukraine.
While speaking to reporters in the Oval Office Friday afternoon, however, Trump said the U.S. was “doing well” with Russia ad that he was “finding it more difficult, frankly, to deal with Ukraine.”
“They don’t have the cards,” Trump said of Kyiv. “In terms of getting a final settlement, it may be easier dealing with Russia which is surprising, because they have all the problems, and they’re bombing the hell out of ’em right now.”
Trump wakes up and thinks…how should I pull focus? I should create more drama.
I hope Macron and Keir talked to (this version of) Trump today lol.
Trump: “I’ve got to sound tough on you ok.”
Putin: “yes, yes, agreed… you need to look even handed”
Trump ” I’ll thunder about some new sanctions or tariffs, or something”
Putin: ” Excellent Donald. You are so smart Donald, so smart.”
I could be wrong but I think all serious sanctions on Russia are already in place. Glad he’s not just ignoring Russia though, if he wants to push Ukraine to the negotiating table by cutting aid and Russia just keeps the war going then he needs to restart the aid if they don’t seriously negotiate
I made a promise to myself that I would ignore anything Trump said or did in his ‘farewell tour’. He’s making it it very difficult to avoid him.
I hope (for all our sakes) that the following happens:
– US and Ukraine bring a deal to Russia that has effectively everything Russia wants accept for one thing: There has to be some peacekeeping force after the ceasefire. It will NOT be the US but it will have to be a EU (or UK) country (simply because nobody else is gonna do it).
– Then Russia either accepts or declines.
We (almost desperately) need Russia to be the one to walk away because in that scenario, at the very least, the status quo will remain – continued aid from the US. OR have Russia face the full wrath of Trump.
What I hope _won’t_ happen is either:
– Zelenskyy continues to ask/demands US security guarantees OR…
– US pushes a final ceasefire proposal which has NO securities (basically only economic interests)
This is because IMO Zelenskyy **_will_** walk out first in either of those two scenarios – forcing everyone to be at the whim of Trump’s aid decision.
Is this a broken clock gets it right twice a day moment?
Putin is fuvking with Trump, hoping to undermine his credibility.
You what he should do? Let Ukraine use US Intel so they know where the missile strikes come from!! That will show em!
“Sanctions” is one of those dual meaning English words. It can mean a penalty for disobeying a law or rule. But it can also mean official permission or approval for an action.
It’s what he should have done in the first place. I’m impressed someone was able to direct him.
Uh huh, he and his entire cult can’t even clearly state that Putin invaded Ukraine and I’m supposed to believe that he is going to do anything that might actually inconvenience Putin?
This is a gift to Russia. He’s setting the stage for rapid sanctions removal.
This is the same guy from last week? The one who proposed… checks notes… lifting sanctions on Russia and allowing them to rejoin the (sic) G7?
Wait after 3 years, there was not full sanctions in place already?
That’s weird.
We yave been here before.
Remember when he said he was the toughest on Russia because he put on some new sanctions?
What possible sanctions can he place on Russia that would get them to relent? It would take massive tarrifs and all out economic war to get Indian Chinan Turkey and others to stop buying their oil.
Trump thinks he has more leverage than he has, not to mention by icing out Europe he has one unchecked variable he can’t control.
Typical Trumpian negotiations. bluster for the show, relent, and pretend he fixed something.
Trump is to diplomacy what Brownian motion is to particules. Thermodynamic laws might be better suited to explain his behavior. It”s difficult to see any semblance of diplomatic strategy behind those daily random moves.
I will shave my beard, hair and eyebrows if Trump actually do this
I don’t believe this.
Everything that I have read thus far on Reddit has said that the USA and Russia are now allies and that in a shooting war between nato and Russia, the USA would be on Russia’s side.
Kinda interesting…Reddit just has nothing but American dumb the world is over quips. But if the US can punish both sides till they stop fighting (like kids at a playground) “I don’t care who started it, it’s finished” vibes who am I to argue with results. Same for EU defense. For the first time I’m actually seeing them try and do something meaningful for their own defense. Dependents are not allies just liabilities.
