  1. > Foreign donors will be barred from giving to political parties and MPs unless they make enough money in the UK to fund it, under plans being drawn up by ministers.

Just ban it all together, or are we going to pretend that some foreign companies will want to influence UK policy in some kind of positive way and not just to increase their profit.

  2. As if that’s going to stop musk from donating to whoever he wants. He’ll just incorporate entity in UK and funnel money through it. The law must be very specific and cover all bases.

  3. Limit? It should be completely stopped, illegal and against the law. It’s election interference.

  4. >At present, parties can accept donations from any company registered in Britain, even if the company makes no money. In future, donations may be restricted by how much profit or revenue a company makes, as part of an overhaul of election law.

I’m sure Twitter UK or Tesla UK will have enough profit or revenue to meet whatever threshold they put forward, so unless I misunderstood something, this does nothing at stopping Musk from donating to Reform.

  5. It needs to be completely banned!! It’s treasonous! It’s a clear risk to our democracy and security

  6. We could end up with a Russian asset as Prime minister like America. Just ban it

  7. Here’s an idea. Create a party budget so that every person that applies to represent a constituency gets the same amount of money to pay for their election.

    Obviously it should be auditable.

No winning elections by paying more than the other guy.
Even playing field where what they say and do actually matters.

That means they are there to represent the people. Not the party donors.

  8. Why not have an open book policy regarding any political party, where and when money comes from and how its spent, full transparency, rather than private firms being able to be political parties

  9. Why are they allowed at all?? What can possibly justify an overseas donation other than to buy favour? They’re clearly not doing it because they think a particular party are good for the people of the UK, are they.

  10. I do find it crazy that it is illegal for me, a nurse, to accept a gift over the value of 10£.

But if I became an MP it would be fine to be bought off by Russia.

  11. All MPs can be bought. Get rid of all foreign donations.

  12. I’m struggling to think of a single positive from allowing this that isn’t simply open corruption. That its not already illegal is astonishing, it’s such a clear distortion of our politics.

  13. This is one of those, why on earth is this not already a thing type situations.

  14. The money will just get funnelled into bot farms and social media campaigns that don’t have the official stamp on them from whover.

Need to get a grasp on how campaigning actually works post Cambridge Analytica.

  15. lmao labour really thinks they can stop reform by doing this. They are going to be absolutely crushed in 2029 and they know it

  16. Yeah, limit it to £0.

There should also be a legal requirement to determine (and publish) the actual origin of any donation, just in case some slimy bastards set themselves up as middlemen to funnel foreign funds to politicians or parties.

  17. There should be a complete ban. The same goes for pressure groups, think tanks and similar bodies.

  18. It’s a start but this should go further I think.

I’m curious how we will also enforce this against donations that are funneled through a UK intermediary

  19. It’s 2025 why haven’t we banned 2nd jobs, personal donations, and gifts, and it’s wild that oversea’s donations aren’t already banned

  20. Pointless.

They can spend billions outside the country on platforms we all use to darkly nudge people without spending a single dollar on a donation.

    When will people realise this?

  21. To zero? Why should political parties be allowed to receive foreign donations.

  22. Plan? Why is it a plan? Just fucking ban it!

Why are politicians so untouchable when it comes to corruption? I can barely accept a fucking branded 50p pen from a supplier at work without it being considered as a bribe!

  23. “Plan to limit” it should be banned outright, we’re not America, never have been, let’s stop trying to emulare their bullshit ways, and that includes not making our democracy for sale to the highest asshole bidder.

  24. Should be 0 not matter what they earn in the UK

No foreigner should ever have any influence on UK politics, and that includes foreign “think tanks”
