I can’t remember who it was but some war analyst said that the end of the Kursk salient would signal the beginning of end of the war from Ukraine’s side. When you put this alongside the ongoing conscription crisis and general inability to fill the ranks, I really don’t think it looks positive
This is like the 7th time Ukraine has held onto some territory far longer than they should have until they are almost encircled and then having to withdraw.
They keep making the same mistake over and over and over again and paying a very heavy price.
Well, there goes one of very few bargaining chips they had. I believe they were planning to exchange this land for some other land Russia holds. And with their best troops almost encircled and methodically destroyed, kinda puts a bit of pressure on Zelensky to come to the bargainning table.
Russia will probably demand the remaining territories of 4 oblasts they’ve annexed to be exchanged for territories in Sumy, Kharkiv, and other oblasts they control. Kursk oblast would be a nice barganing chip for Ukraine here but who knows how much of it they’ll control when talks actually start.
Should have happened a long time ago. The Kursk offensive’s main point was PR for international backers, to bolster their faith in the war effort so the money and materiel keeps flowing.
Now that the US has all but pulled out and Europe, in turn, doubled down, the calculus has changed. Nothing will convince the US to come back, and Europe will provide as much aid as its internal political machinations will allow.
These things will happen independently of Kursk or any other PR efforts by Ukraine, as they have become part of the new dynamic between the US and Europe. Neither side can relent in this game of chicken, so what Ukraine does is largely immaterial in this case. Thus, there is no point in wasting precious manpower on a front as doomed as Kursk.
They need to.hold it for the upcoming talks. Realistically if Ukraine withdraws from Russia what does Ukraine have to leverage Russia? Maybe the money frozen?
Losing the US support, losing Kursk and probably having to lower conscription to 18yo. Let’s just say this is the worst position Ukraine has had this war and the worst possible moment to come to the negotiation table.
It will be interesting what actually happens.
This could end up in a collapse if Zelensky isn’t careful.
