Stoke Newington Church Street is getting the taste of middle class Greggs

  1. I fully support direct action (Barclays style) against chains opening in areas where they will compete with longstanding independent businesses

  2. Tbh, I’m surprised Stokey Church Street doesn’t have a middle-class Greggs competitor already. It’d obvs have to be vegan, but still…

  3. It’s been egged already and doesn’t seem to be getting much custom… quite surprised they thought it would work after the Pret they put in has to close early because it gets so few customers

  4. Because £4.10 is the correct price for a sausage roll.

  5. Oh, wow, an actual bakery that sells proper bread…

  6. This isn’t gentrification. The street is already very, very gentrified. This is a post gentrification thing where chains are now targeting areas that would traditionally have valued independent and local businesses (as opposed to the wealthy areas that attract less local footfall and can sustain upmarket chains).

Anyway, the street already has a posh bakery and countless posh cafes.

  7. Stokey has been fully gentrified and unaffordable for years now fyi

  8. There is some truth to portraying Gails like this. But also reflects how some people in this area think they are soo cool and above everyone else. With their 2000’s hipster outfits and shopping in Whole Foods and Dusty Knuckle. Very authentic.
Dusty Knuckle is amazing by the way – but has the same prices as Gails, which is just ok.
And Gails became so pervasive because of the pandemic, they really thrived in those years.
But, yeah, I think you are right, if Gails opened there it is time to move away from the area – to a genuinely authentic village like neighbourhood with even less transport links.

  9. I get it, I get, people don’t like chains. But…. I love Gails sausage roll, would kill for it, especially when fresh, on Saturday morning. Pricey? Yes. Worth it? Yes.

Really good selection of breads, sourdough is excellent.

  10. Aren’t these bakeries all much of a muchness? Is there something differentiating between them?

  11. Has Stoke Newington honestly not had a Gail’s this whole time? It’s the epitome of gentrification!!

  12. Hope they build a Tesco local too, absolutely insufferable street

  13. It’s not been the same since they stopped the cheddar chive scones.

  14. Honestly I like my baked goods behind glass not left all open for some twat to be splitting over whilst asking for a flat white.

  15. It’s a bizarre decision considering Stoke Newington has reached post-gentrification. There’s an independent cafe and bakery opposite. Go there.

  16. GAIL’s is a real bakery. Greggs is a factory outlet

  17. London is now just one gigantic chain of copy paste shops….sad

  18. When I see this shop it always makes me think of Gail from Corrie, I can’t take it seriously 😁

  19. I guess I’m upper class now as I wouldn’t step foot in a Gail’s, and even less likely a Greggs.
