  1. SCOOP:

    > A bipartisan group of House members has introduced legislation to redesignate Turkey at the State Department as a Middle Eastern country, rather than a European country, describing the move as a message to Turkey about its turn away from its relationships with Europe and the United States and shift toward U.S. adversaries.

    > The bill is designed “to send a clear message to Ankara: The United States recognizes Turkey’s turn to the Middle East and no longer sees Turkey prioritizing its relationship with Europe,” according to a statement from the bill’s lead sponsors, Reps. Brad Schneider (D-IL) and Gus Bilirakis (R-FL).

    > The statement says that the designation change is consistent with Turkey’s growing ties with China and Iran, its backing of Hamas and its hostile military actions toward Greece and Cyprus, which “are fundamentally at odds with Western security interests”; its “increasingly anti-Western posture, turning away from its European aspirations”; and its “growing authoritarianism and continued hostility toward NATO allies.”

    > “Turkey has consistently demonstrated a complete disregard for following international law,” Bilirakis said in a statement. “Erdoğan repeatedly acts contrary to American interests, with his dangerous behavior contributing to the instability of the region. The time has come for official U.S. foreign policy to more accurately reflect the realities of this hostile regime’s conduct and for Erdoğan to be held accountable.”

  2. It’s interesting that this is happening at the exact time as Turkey seems to be pivoting towards helping Ukraine. It’s acting against Israel certainly, but right now the US is far more hostile to NATO countries than Turkey is. Turkey is pretty close to a dictatorship, but I wouldn’t say they were experiencing “increasing authoritarianism”, they’re just staying the same – whereas the US is definitely sliding closer to dictatorship.

  3. I see this as an attack on Europe. Americans talking about loyality…. Cant make that up. We need a new securitiy infrastrucutre without the US. From Turkey to Finland. From the Fjords to Lisbon.

  4. [edit] I was corrected and my post below is false. Turkey is specifically named in article 6.

No one here yet mentioned article 5. Seems to me this is a loophole the US can use to effectively back out of its obligation if Turkey would be attacked. You see, when the treaty was signed, lots of colonies were still held by Europe. If the colonizers went warring, or their colonies were attacked, then article 5 did not apply. It only applies to Europe and North America! It is literally what it opens with:

The Parties agree that an armed attack against one or more of them in Europe or North America shall be considered an attack against them all and consequently they agree that, if such an armed attack occurs, each of them, in exercise of the right of individual or collective self-defence recognized by Article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations, will assist the Party or Parties so attacked by taking forthwith, individually and in concert with the other Parties, such action as it deems necessary, including the use of armed force, to restore and maintain the security of the North Atlantic area.

  5. Europe doesn’t care what America thinks anymore, they are moving forward.

Turkey has a role to play. They have already done a good job stopping Russian ships and supplying drones to Ukraine.

  6. Bilirakis was born in Gainesville, Florida, and grew up in Tarpon Springs, Florida, the son of Evelyn (née Miaoulis) and Michael Bilirakis.^([2]) He lives in Palm Harbor and is the grandson of **Greek** immigrants.

Ah looks like athens didn’t liked increasing turkish influence in europe and send some bribes to congress to change our continent 🤣🤣🤣

  7. IDK why you removed the portion of the title specifying this was about the US. From your Scotland flair, I assumed at first that the “House” mentioned in the header was the British House of Commons.

  8. A motion pushed by a Greek American congressmen, at a time we are losing allies fast, and against the second largest army of NATO and quite possibly the only country with the balls to do anything against Russia or Israel.

Just how moronic can we be? This much I guess.

  9. Lol i like how thr implication is “we’re designating you as bad and not good”

Because we all kniw what the US think when it says middle east versus any other region

  10. Turkiye is a European country. Especially these days as they pivoted to helping Ukraine.

Turkiye should be in the European Union to help us in the upcoming WW3, where they can help with there big army against the red menace and there allies (US and China)

    EU citizens for Turkiye!

  11. Nothing Americans do can surprise us Turks at this point, we’ve stopped seeing them as allies a long time ago, so they can go fuck themselves. But I love that Trump government has absolutely ruined America’s image in the eyes of their allies and now everybody is seeing them for what they truly are.

Trump’s idiotic policies even led Europeans to seek closer ties with us, including integration of Turkey into the new European security architecture without the USA. So I guess we shouldn’t really be complaining lol.

  12. Another braindead lobbying initiative by some self-conscious nationalist who probably didn’t even set foot in Greece once.
Wonder why everyone is cool with dual loyalty as long it’s the “right” minorities doing it.

  13. yes saar we are middle eastern we ride camel we are not
part of europe saar so let us stay out of war saar my mother has dark hair saar save evrope yourself saar 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🐪🐪🐪👳🏿‍♂️👳🏿‍♂️👳🏿‍♂️🕋🕋🕋

  14. Regardless of whether you think Turkey is a European or Middle Eastern country, I think we can all agree that the leaders of the “free world” are highly regarded individuals.

For decades, we have allowed the dumbest people in the room make all the important decisions, and we will soon face the consequences of that. Is WWIII inevitable? It’s difficult to say, but the fact that it’s a possibility is just absurd. We need to stop letting greedy, ego-driven imbeciles call the shots.

  15. > Turkey is showing complete disregard for the observance of international law.

Meanwhile, the US promotes and proposes territorial expansion by force, against the core tenet of international law
