Whose idea was this?

  1. Very true. The newer ones are so ugly. We have a couple of the older phone boxes near us being used as a little library and defib storage.

  2. Yep, then you had to go to real effort to vandalise them, smashing each pane of glass individually, now it’s a couple of big hits and there’s glass everywhere.

  3. It’s the same phone box. The one on the left is in its winter plumage. They shed this red coat in spring, and look like the one on the right until the autumn winds come again.

  4. Actually, there’s a much bigger downgrade going on right now

  5. That would be the *fault* of every Conservative voter of the 1980s whose selfish I’m alright Jack attitudes brought to power the penny-pinching, tax cutting, privatising state assets, Tories.

  6. It was an effort to stop people pissing in them, that is why there is such good visibility on the new one and why it has an open air base.

Personally I think providing toilets and even showers would have been a better idea, but that would, of course, just encourage people to be homeless and as the old style phone box was already a significant causal factor in the homeless problem you wouldn’t want to make it worse by adding showers.

I would like to see the 21st century be a time where we move towards a more honest and open society; where the rich simply ride into our work places on horseback and just start whipping us until some sort of winner is determined.

  7. I always feel partly responsible for this terribleness – my first ever job was working in an extrusions factory that made the rubber strips on the inside of the doors (the seals/things to stop them banging). I punched the fixing holes in that many of them that I probably did the entire country’s worth. 🙁

  8. Out in the new forest are. A lot of old phone booth have been turned into library’s it’s really cute and nice

  9. The old ones are iconic don’t get me wrong, and the new ones shout 1980’s, but at least the latter ones are the likely candidates for vernalisation, whereas the red ones are hard as fuck.

  10. Surely though those new ones help disabled access?

Not that anyone nowadays needs them, unless they want to advertise their services in an alterative reality where the Internet doesn’t exist.

  11. Good to see OP is keeping up to date with developments

  12. Another plus point with the new one is they seem to hold the odour of cigarettes much better

  13. You could have just stuck the UK there in general tbh

  14. The newer ones are easier to have sex in, they are a bit bigger than the older phoneboxes

  15. If this bothers you then find another way to contact your drug dealer.

  16. You guys still have payphone? The company operating them in my city want us to pay for cellphone plan so they removed almost all of them.

  17. When I lived in London, in the 90’s. The phone booths would be covered in Call girl “post card” flyers, stuck all over the inside of them.
Heaps of ‘‘em. Rub & tug business cards with rude pics. As an Aussie it made me laugh. Great things for smoking weed when it rained. Slept in one on a drunken New Years night lost.
Pretty sure me and my girlfriend at the time did naughty things inside one. We also did it in regency park. I think it was, it was walking distance from Harley St… aah Catherine I often think about ya. Hope you are happy.
