The Russians have always been well aware that NATO is a defensive alliance and have never wanted to attack them. All countries join NATO voluntarily, they are not invaded. The Russians also know that NATO is much stronger than they are.

Don’t forget Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Qazaqstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Chechnya, Circassia, Dagestan, Crimea, Kazan khaganate, Astrakhan and all the peoples that never had their own state some of which are almost fully extinct by now.

It’s insane that the Soviets were actually able to spread the lie that they were anti-imperialist. No, the Soviets were just as imperialist, if not more. Russia inherited the USSR’s institutions and it’s also authoritarian. Not much changed. Russia never learnt from the past and stuck with it.

They just understand the concept as any/all opposed to Russia. Suppose it’s similar to how Americans use to call people communists if they were opposed to America without having any idea what communism even means.
