As a European (and outsider) I thought Canada was American too, but I understand from Canadian expats here that they don’t see themselves as American and and I respect that..

From a Portuguese speaking perspective that sounds bad in my ear. Americano is how we call Americans. But we don’t call Canadians canadianos… We call them canadenses. I’m guessing it sounds weird to Spanish speaking ppl too.
Just call it a Canadian if you wish my dude.
