Spain remains under Storm Jana’s grip this weekend, with heavy rain, thunderstorms, and hail prompting weather alerts.

The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has issued an orange alert for much of the peninsula as the storm refuses to budge, bringing widespread downpours and keeping the nation firmly in the grip of bad weather.

A weekend washout

Saturday, March 8, was a soggy affair across almost all of Spain, and the rain is showing no signs of stopping as Sunday brings more of the same. As previously reported by the Euro Weekly News, AEMET warned on Friday that the storm was on its way, and true to form, it has delivered a relentless deluge, coupled with powerful winds.

The forecast for Sunday isn’t looking much brighter. Expect thick cloud cover, widespread rainfall, and the possibility of thunderstorms and small hail. Some regions will take the brunt of the storm, with heavy and persistent downpours expected in Catalonia, northern Aragon, Navarra, and Andalucia. Of these, Andalucia is at the highest risk of intense thunderstorms, adding a dramatic twist to an already chaotic weather pattern this March.

Temperatures in Spain ‘all over the place’

It’s not just the rain causing disruption – temperatures are also going on a rollercoaster ride. While Galicia and parts of the Mediterranean coast will see a rise in temperatures, the eastern half of the country, the Balearic Islands, and Melilla are in for a chilly dip.

Some cities in Castilla y León are set to shiver, with thermometers dropping to freezing or below. Ávila will hit -1ºC, while Burgos, Soria and Segovia will hover at 0ºC. Meanwhile, at the other end of the scale, Castellon will register the highest temperature on the mainland at 19ºC, with Melilla, Las Palmas and Santa Cruz de Tenerife breaking the 20ºC mark.

The storm rumbles into the new week

Don’t expect Storm Jana to pack up and leave as the week begins. The unsettled weather will stick around on Monday, March 10, bringing more cloud cover and scattered rain across most of the country. However, the storm will begin to weaken, and the winds, while still strong in some areas  – particularly the Gulf of Cadiz – will gradually lose their intensity. The orange alert in Galicia will be lifted, and no other major warnings are currently in place as of the time of writing.

As for temperatures, they will start creeping up again in southern Spain and the Canary Islands, while the northeast will see a slight drop. Minimum temperatures will edge down across the north, the Mediterranean coast, and the Balearic Islands, but rise slightly elsewhere.

By Tuesday, Storm Jana should finally begin its retreat. Until then, Spain remains at the mercy of the storm – so keep the brollies handy and brace yourself for a wet and wild few days ahead.
