Like every country, it very much depends where the property is situated.
There are region in the country where you can easily leave you property unlocked and not worry about anything going missing. Then, there are region where everything, including the building can disappear overnight.
Not an expat but I have friends that own villas/rural houses which they visit only couple of times an year and it’s all fine.

I’m not an expat myself, but I’ve lived among various expat communities.
Crime very much depends on three things – location, location, location. There’s villages/regions where it won’t be a concern, but it also depends largely on the little enclave of houses you find yourself in. I know people who’ve had their home broken into multiple times while away, while others can leave for months, having basically zero security, and it’s all there when they come back. Expats in the particular villages will usually know, so you should ask them specifically.
As per your second question – many will do just that. Some even show up just for a summer vacation.
