Submission Statement:
Chief Minister Lalduhoma of the State of Mizoram attended a meeting of leaders of two Myanmar-based rebel groups in the state capital Aizawl in an official capacity in sync with the Union government, sources in the state government told NDTV today.
Merger Agreement:
The leaders of two pro-democracy rebel groups from Myanmar, the Chinland Council and the Interim Chin National Consultative Council (ICNCC), met in Aizawl on February 27 and [signed an agreement](https://www.ndtv.com/world-news/2-myanmar-chin-rebel-groups-meet-in-mizoram-merge-to-form-new-body-7857295) to merge to form the Chin National Council (CNC).
Lalduhoma, local leaders, and representatives from the Chinland Council’s armed wing, the Chin National Army, and the ICNCC’s Chin Brotherhood were present during the signing of the agreement.
Countering China:
Analysts say India may be trying to counter China, which brokered peace deals between the junta on one side, and the Ta’ang and Kokang on the other side in Myanmar’s Shan State, by looking for leverage among the Chin.
SIGNIFICANCE:
This is the first time India has explicitly sided with pro-democracy rebels in the ongoing civil war in Myanmar.
Indian expansion in the 21st century was not something on my bingo cards.
I suppose this solidifies the border further and helps with the drug trafficking issue but does this have any further benefits to India? I suppose further inroads to South East Asia but you still have the rest of Myanmar and who knows how that turns out.
Why would India agree for the rebels to join the Union? It seems like an extra headache in the North East where already federal government control is shaky at best.
