Im polish and im not full of amazing rock artists. I just cannot function without them. I want things that have absolutely beautiful and unusual music with meaningful lyrics. Especially recommend me the political ones.

Something like this:

Breakout-Modlitwa

Kult- Arahja

Obywatel G.C.- Tak…tak..to ja

  1. Četri balti krekli (the song) if you like 60’s rock.

This song was written for the 1967 Latvian film Četri balti krekli/Elpojiet dziļi, which has a plot of a young man writing songs for his band – only to have a Soviet culture critic attempt to censor them due to their lyrics. Unsurprisingly, the plot struck a little too close to home for the soviets and was prevented from being screened.

Musically, it’s great, but what really makes it stand out is the lyrics. Here’s my personal translation and interpretation:

“If a young man has four white shirts,
He can go through life without much reflection.
And only once in a while, someone reminds him
That the song is not about shirts, but about conscience.

The first (shirt) for his superiors – when he has to show himself.
And then, it’s up to him what happens to the rest.

White shirt by morning, but already black by noon.
And then the third shirt is put on in the evening.

You can change white shirts like you change beliefs.
But when the evening comes, they will all be black

Will there still be any point in reminding him then?
That the song is not about shirts, but about consciences?”

I don’t think I have to explain much because the meaning is pretty obvious. The white shirts symbolize the way people present themselves as righteous to the system and their superiors, compromising their own morals until it piles up. You can change shirts as much as you change your morals and go through life without ever caring until you even forget about your own conscience. You can start the day “clean” with your nice white shirt but by evening no amount of cleaning can take away the stain of bending yourself to the system.

Here is the link to the original version of the song:

EDIT: edited because the formattign was weird

  2. Check out Remix -Vēstule (1986). Decent Latvian rock LP. Also Credo – Melnais kliedziens (1986).
