WASHINGTON — In a press conference last Thursday, Senator Shelley Moore Capito expressed her support for the Trump administration’s efforts to reduce government waste through the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Capito emphasized the importance of shrinking “bloated bureaucracies” to help suit the needs of the people better.

Capito acknowledged potential impacts on workers in West Virginia but remained optimistic about the program’s future. “When it starts to hit close to home, like at NETL, or the Bureau of Fiscal Service, or Forest Service, it hurts,” she said. “So I think what we’re going to see in the long-run is going to see all of this sort of settle-out, find the jobs that are the ones that are absolutely critical, and if somebody’s left that job because of a government efficiency effort, hire back into those positions or hire that person back.”

She concluded by noting, “The goals are great, the methods are good, but the execution is probably a little rough at this point.”
