The Government released its second emissions reduction plan in December. The plan covers 2026 to 2030 and contains targeted actions in the sectors of our economy that produce the greatest emissions: agriculture, transport, energy and waste. It also includes other areas such as the New Zealand Emissions Trading Scheme and sustainable finance.

Updated emissions projections were published with the second emissions reduction plan. These projections give confidence that New Zealand remains ‘on track’ to achieve our first emissions budget and meet the first part of Target 9.

The projections also give confidence that New Zealand can meet our second emissions budget, with the implementation of the policies and initiatives in the second emissions reduction plan. As a result, this part of the target has been upgraded to ‘on track’, from a previous assessment of ‘probable’.

Following the release of the second emissions reduction plan, effort is now focused on implementing its policies.
