Belgium’s long-standing No.1 goalkeeper, Koen Casteels, has made the shock decision to walk away from the national team.
His announcement comes on the heels of Thibaut Courtois’ return to the squad—a move that Casteels describes as the Belgian FA ‘rolling out the red carpet’ for the Real Madrid shot-stopper.
Courtois’ return: A divisive decision for Belgium
Courtois had been absent from international duty since June 2023, having reportedly fallen out with former manager Dominic Tedesco over the national team’s captaincy. The 31-year-old keeper was said to be unhappy that Romelu Lukaku wore the armband instead of him. However, the appointment of new boss Rudi Garcia has changed the landscape, paving the way for Courtois to reclaim the No.1 spot. Many in Belgian football see his return as a huge boost—Courtois is widely regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the world, with two Champions League medals to his name. Yet Casteels views it differently, calling it a “strange” U-turn by the Belgian FA.

Casteels quits: ‘I am no longer available’ for Belgium squad
Casteels, who plays club football for Al-Qadsiah in Saudi Arabia, expressed his frustration in a candid interview with the Belgian podcast MidMid. “It’s not so much about Thibaut, but more about the association,” he said, accusing the FA of letting Courtois dictate the terms of his return. Casteels believes such an approach undermines the values of team sport and sporting organisations. “As of today,” he added, “I am no longer available [for the national team].” For many supporters, his departure is a shock—Casteels had only recently established himself as Belgium’s go-to goalkeeper during Courtois’ absence.
Belgium’s next chapter: National team braces for crucial UEFA fixtures
Despite losing Casteels, Belgium will move forward with Courtois firmly between the sticks. Manager Rudi Garcia appears relieved to have the Real Madrid keeper back on board, especially as the national side enters a transitional period following several retirements and tactical changes. Belgium’s next challenge arrives later this month with two UEFA Nations League clashes against Ukraine, set for Thursday 20 March and Sunday 23 March. Garcia will be keen to make a strong impression in these fixtures, but he now faces an added test: uniting a squad that has just lost its No.1 in controversial fashion.
For the Belgian FA, the focus will be on rallying around Courtois and ensuring the dressing room remains harmonious. Whether Casteels reconsiders his decision in the future is unclear—but for now, the Red Devils are pressing on without him, hoping Courtois’ experience can help them navigate a critical stretch in the international calendar.
