Germany’s Merz and Social Democrats clear first hurdle to forming new government coalition
Germany’s future chancellor, Friedrich Merz, said on Saturday that his conservative CDU party has reached a preliminary agreement in principle with the Social Democrats (SPD) to form a coalition government. They are now set to move on to the next, more decisive stage of full-fledged coalition negotiations. Their goal is to have a government in place by mid-April, six months after Olaf Scholz’s government fell on November 6, 2024. France24 journalist Morgan Ayre has the latest.

A move in the right direction
To all the germans: how do you feel having once again the party that destroyed you once again in power?

This is what Brussels demands
No more woke and broke 😂😂😂
And…? Agreement with immigration, finance, labor market. What are the details?
The second largest voting block party ignored in the German style of fake democracy. JD Vance is right and US needs to run from NATO.
A move in the right direction
Germany is doomed. This will be a worthless govt.
Have the criminal investigators in Germany found the social media person who called the fat lady politician Ricarda Lang 'fat"? Maybe the extra 500 billion debt can be used for more police.
Germanys over
Congratulations to both parties!
So… more of the same… Same players that lead to chaos before…
First move is ignoring 21% of the electorate? worse than the Russians
New faces, same policies. The SPD along with the media will never let them enact any of the policies they disagree with. It’s all just hollow talk. Another UK Torries v2.0.
So in reality they are still talking and having meetings. We all know that no matter what, taxes are going to go way up even if nothing else happens.
This left and right coalition is antidemocratic
Blackrock germany im sory😢
There 'is nothing in dry towels yet', as one of our german idioms goes. There are still too many insecurities.
Our government's reputation is going to make a long nose dive again and the ground to make it on will be made from shards of glass.
Big announcements made way too early. As always.
Wait and see.
