  1. I agree there should be some punitive mechanism for genuine negligence in cases like this. But as the owner of the motorhome said, what incentive is there for people to call the Home Office to report a stowaway if they themselves are going to be slapped with a hefty fine? Better to just let them run off.

  2. > A couple who discovered a migrant had clung to the back of their vehicle all the way home from France have been issued a £1,500 fine.

    > Adrian and Joanne Fenton said they called police when they found the person zipped inside the cover of a bike rack at their home in Heybridge, Essex, in October.

Wouldn’t this just incentivise people to not report this illegal migration?

  3. The couple had a bike trailer on the external of their car. They chose not to stop and check before crossing the border.

Sure, the border staff didn’t check either. But that doesn’t absolve the couple of negligence.

Hopefully those who now see this article realise the importance of checking before crossing over.

This is no different to when someone slips something into your unaccompanied baggage at the airport – it’s your luggage, your responsibility – and you are the smuggler even if unintentionally.

The fine seems to be more used as a way to send a message – otherwise all the traffickers will just claim they didn’t check either. Get paid in advance, then release the passengers to the home office on arrival – easy money!

  4. Stupidity like this is one of the reasons for rise of far right

  5. You too could use this excuse to smuggle drugs, when caught, just tell the law you don’t take any responsibility for your adult stuff.

  6. What the actual fuck?

Well done, government officials and those in public office.

  7. Hopefully their appeal will be successful. Border staff are paid to check for this. I think it’s unfair to call them stupid, naive maybe.

  8. They get fined and chances are the migrant will get housing, money and support

  9. Yes, they should get fined. They didn’t check their vehicle. If you want our border to be secure, everyone should be at fault for negligently allowing people to enter the country.

  10. Great, so if I ever find myself in this situation, I’ll make sure I let the chap go and not tell the authorities – got it!

  11. >It said they failed to “check that no clandestine entrant was concealed in the vehicle”, but Mrs Fenton contested that technically he was clinging to the outside rather than aboard the motorhome.

    >The email also said the “entrant” was found by an authorised search officer, despite the couple saying they called the police the night they found him.

Either their account doesn’t track, or an HO beauraucrat have sent a template fine and response letter without regard for the actualities of the case.

If it’s the latter, the couple haven’t yet filed an appeal, so I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s overturned.

  12. Another example of ridiculous Britain. Beyond dumb. Find an illegal migrant in your vehicle? Let him go or face a £1500 fine. Absolute lobotomy stuff this is.

  13. TL:DR wasn’t he actually on the outside and they informed the authorities. Fuck this shower of shit Govt

  14. Oki so don’t report stuff like this in the future, got it.

  15. The people who accidentally brought the person in will get punished, what punishment will the person who snuck in get?

  16. At what point can it be considered that the government is literally just bringing them over instead of them being illegal migrants?

  17. So if this ever happens to me (it won’t as I don’t and never will own a motor home) I now know that the best course of action is to simply let the migrant run off, then I won’t get any fine. Nice work Home Office

  18. Some contractor close to power would lose 500k income each if an immigrant come like this instead of the boats. Its all about some politically connected rich getting richer using immigrants

  19. The UK logic strikes again…. I’m sorry for normal law-abiding citizens

  20. They get a fine to pay for the illegal to get a hotel and board. Two tier at its finest!

  21. That’s absolutely ridiculous. No one will call this in any more.

  22. this government (and the last) are all upside down… smh. its getting to sinister levels.

Want to report on an illegal immigrant? nah, get a fine. Deincentivise them from coming? nah, give them a hotel room and any resources they need. How will the hotel owners pay for it? nah, the gov will. Where is the money coming from? you, your taxes, you dummy. But there is a blackhole worth billions? oh yeah, lets raise taxes on your earnings as working people. But then we wont have money and the super wealthy will horde the assets, isnt that unfair? lol, nah, thats the game.

  23. It sounds like an automatic fine was issued

Either they knew he was there (unlikely) or their appeal will show they had no intent to commit a crime

Why is this even a story? People get automatic fines then appeal them and get them dropped, for all sorts of things, every day

I got a fine for not paying for a prescription even though I had a pre payment certificate. I appealed. The fine was cancelled. It was on the bloddy BBC

    Racist shit stirring non news

  24. That’s dumb more people Will just let them go and not report it

  25. Note to self, don’t alert the authorities, just tell them to run

  26. Anarcho-tyranny example #23563

    >Anarcho-tyranny is a social condition characterized by a combination of anarchy and tyranny, where the government is simultaneously ineffective at enforcing laws against criminal behaviour and overly oppressive against law-abiding citizens

  27. How in heavens name didn’t border security pick this up? They supposedly have all kinds of sophisticated infra red imaging devices to detect stowaways.

  28. these rules have been in place for years as all international truck drivers know & have been scewed over by. nice to see the rules being applied to the fenton`s as well. ignorance of the rules doesn`t get an exemption.

  29. This will encourage people to report shit. Knowing this, if i discovered one, I’d help to hide them till I could off load them. Definitely wouldn’t be doing any reporting.
