Flying around in "EarthQuest" (app on Oculus Quest VR headset) I found what looks like houses and gardens on top of a building, on the NW corner of the junction of Baker Street and Marylebone Road.
Are they real, private houses?

We are not supposed to talk about that.
Report to The Folly.
Yes, this also exists in a building in the King’s Cross redevelopment near the gasholders

Looks like a communal roof terrace and penthouse apartments with direct access.

Yes, in this case you should search for “berkeley court roof garden” and will find many pictures. They are nothing new, but were once planned and designed as part of the building. There are some pictures from the 1930s that show the old gardens. The building is called Berkeley Court, and this property listing mentions a “Stunning communal roof terrace”, but I can’t find any pictures: [https://www.napierwatt.co.uk/properties/berkeley-court-marylebone-road-marylebone-nw1/](https://www.napierwatt.co.uk/properties/berkeley-court-marylebone-road-marylebone-nw1/)
I think the buildings on the roof just contain the machinery for the lifts + entrance doors the roof
I’ve been up here a couple of times. Really cool – very rickety elevators tho.
Also there are koi ponds in the reception
I am a lift engineer and work in this building. It’s beautiful up there, especially in the summer
A slightly less glamorous example of this that comes to mind is the flats that used to exist on top of the Arndale shopping centre in Manchester:

Odd looking sunbather
For a minute I missed the part where they were actually on top of a building, wondered what you meant – maybe there were roof gardens on some of those houses, and then wondered about the mole people who live in those apartments that I thought were underground.
Surely it floods, he thought.
Holy fuck. It’s depressing how fucking luxurious that is. The building is in front of Regent’s Park, too, iirc. And they decided to have a park on the roof anyway and it’s stunning.
If you think the gardens are nice, you should see the lifts.
Thanks, u/bigbenjy
I’m too drunk for this
Yes
Many people have gardens and terraces on their roofs. The penthouses/top floors of these buildings are much sought after, as you can imagine.
