HAD TO SAY. SHAWANDA. SO GOVERNOR LANDRY TOLD ME JUST HOURS AGO THAT HE REALLY DOESN’T KNOW HOW PRESIDENT TRUMP’S TARIFFS WILL IMPACT BUSINESSES HERE IN LOUISIANA. BUT HE SAYS, REGARDLESS, IT IS GOING TO BE A VERY BUMPY RIDE. GOVERNOR LANDRY SPOKE TO BUSINESS OWNERS AND BUSINESS LEADERS TODAY AT THE CHAMBER PAC LUNCHEON, HOSTED AT THE TCHEFUNCTE COUNTRY CLUB TO DELIVER AN UPDATE ON HIS GOALS FOR THE 2025 LEGISLATIVE SESSION. LOUISIANA’S ECONOMY DEPENDS ON PORTS, ENERGY AND INTERNATIONAL TRADE, MEANING ANY TARIFF CHANGES COULD HAVE A DIRECT IMPACT ON JOBS AND INDUSTRIES HERE IN LOUISIANA. LANDRY SAID THE FULL EFFECTS OF PRESIDENT TRUMP’S NEWLY IMPOSED TARIFFS ARE UNCLEAR, BUT THE GOVERNOR DOES SUPPORT THE TARIFFS NONETHELESS. LOOK, WE DON’T KNOW. I MEAN, THERE’S GOING TO BE A LOT OF TURBULENCE THAT THERE’S NO SUCH THING AS FREE TRADE. BUT THERE IS SUCH THING AS FAIR TRADE. AND I THINK THAT THE PRESIDENT’S POSITION OF RECIPROCAL TARIFFS, I THINK, IS THE BEST POLICY OUT THERE. A PLAN 25% METALS TARIFFS IS SET TO TAKE PLACE TONIGHT AT MIDNIGHT. RE

Gov. Landry supports Trump’s tariffs but warns of ‘turbulence’ for Louisiana’s economy

Gov. Jeff Landry backs Trump’s tariffs but predicts they could bring economic challenges to Louisiana’s trade-dependent industries.

Gov. Jeff Landry admitted he’s unsure how President Donald Trump’s newly imposed tariffs will impact Louisiana businesses, but he’s certain about one thing: the state’s economy is in for a rough road ahead.Speaking at the Chamber-PAC luncheon at the Tchefuncte Country Club, Landry provided an update on his priorities for the 2025 legislative session. With Louisiana’s economy heavily reliant on ports, energy, and international trade, any tariff changes could directly affect jobs and industries across the state. While the full effects of Trump’s latest tariffs remain unclear, Landry supported the policy.”There’s going to be a lot of turbulence,” Landry said. “I can tell you that that for a long time, Americans have been trying and been told a bill of good about that, that discusses free trade. What I found out is when I’ve talked to businesses out there that there’s no such thing as free trade, but there is such thing as fair trade. And I think that the president’s, position of reciprocal tariffs, I think is the best policy out there. It says, ‘listen, if you are placing a tariff on a good that I get to place a tariff on a good at the same rate that you’re placing it’, and then and then all of a sudden guess what. That’s fair trade.” The new tariffs include a 25% increase on imported metals, set to take effect at midnight.
