Am I the only one thinking that Trump is achieving what Berlusconi did in Italy 20 years ago? Control of the media, dealing with war criminals treating them as friends, bringing a country to its own disaster blaming immigrants, poor people and making laws to protect himself from the many accusation

  1. You forgot: becoming a running joke for all other countries, going on holiday with Putin, collapsing the country’s economy until adults were back in charge and were forced to mitigate the damage by raising the minimum age for pensions by 5 years (Prof. Mario Monti’s “technical” government).

These are all facts that happened by the way.

  2. As a Brazilian I can see Bolsonaro clearly.

Trump is a man that distorts the meaning of free speech to allow for speech that is harmful. He needs that harm to threaten trust in institutions. People start to believe that he and his friends are the ones who know stuff and the legislators, judiciary and others are the enemy and blocking the change for the good.

He attempts to legitimize actions against those who he claim to be the enemy, including institutions. He also wants his followers to feel like martirs, who won’t be punished and if so they will be treated as victims, not criminals.

Soon you have popular approval for a coup. But you may not need one. Putin runs Russia as an oligarchy, Trump is deregulating social media to use it as a weapon inside and outside. Those are his wanna be oligarcs.

Bolsonaro did the same, eventually he all in into a coup which failed. Most americans are not yet aware how democracies die in the 21st century yet.

Protect your institutions. Fragmentation of power is the key. This is the lesson learned after the nazi took germany. If we forget history it repeats.
