Greenland Elections: Democratic party wins amid Trump’s interest in the island • FRANCE 24

In the recent Greenland elections, the Democratic Party (Demokraatit), led by Jens-Frederik Nielsen, won around 30% of the vote, doubling its support from previous elections. The party advocates for gradual independence from Denmark. The independence-leaning Naleraq Party gained about 24.5%, while traditional parties like Inuit Ataqatigiit and Siumut received 22% and 15%, respectively. These results come as Donald Trump has expressed interest in acquiring the island, as Clovis Casali explains from Nuuk.

  11. In the multipolar world we are now entering true independence is a pipe dream. Greenland lacks the power to resist any of the worlds great powers. It will inevitably have to come under the sphere of influence of one of them. The best they can hope for is to leverage the best deal while they can before they are forced under the thumb of one them.

    Keep an open mind about joining our nation! There are many different ways to do that that would be mutually beneficial!

  16. What he says is not accurate.

    The party that got the most votes is coreectly the ones that wants the slowest independence but incorrectly the second most votes whent to an independec party, but its pure independence and do not want any affiliations with the US at all, except they are okay with doing buisness with them.
    This business, along with buisnes with Denmark and the EU, is their way to make greenland independent.

    The two parties with most votes are the most anti-American. The difference is only that one wants slow indepence from Denmark and the other wants its fast.

    The parties that have been the most soft in their expressions about the US had HUGE losses, and one party lost 2/3 of its votes.

  18. American here. I hope Greenland does NOT join the USA. They are far better off as part of Europe. Democracy and freedoms are being eroded in USA faster than the stock market.

  19. This is a move towards the U.S. despite what is being said by some. Independence from Denmark is the first step in aligning with the United States. Geopolitically, this is the correct path. The western hemisphere must realign to counter the same from the east. Think it over.

  21. Of course Greenland should have their independence and Denmark support the independence process – but that doesn't mean Greenland want to belong to the USA. On the contrary, a recent poll show 85% of the population reject such a move. And who would even want to belong to the USA with super expensive healthcare and education. Look at how other US territories are doing, poverty, high unemployment, no voting rights etc.

  22. The minute Greenland goes 100% independent, the US will move right in. Because the US knows Greenland can not defend themselves from US military or shiney business men shaking hands with Greenlanders doing a business deal 🤥🤥🤥

Stay away from joining the US, you'll get no benefit, you'll have barely any healthcare and your resources will be taken from you and given to their greedy companies, but of course… it's all for 'national security' reasons. I hope the leaders of the 'free world' respect this democratic decision.

  30. The biggest problem Greenland faces is , if they will become independent that also means no money from Denmark . And at the moment they cant survive without that money , so the leaders has a huge task infront of them .

  32. The problem is that one of the parties got a good chunk of votes and they are more friendly to Trump. Greenland is still in trouble.

  35. The democratic process, the Greenlanders just went through is great and all. , but none of it matters. Greenlanders will, unfortunately have to face the reality of being helpless.

  36. Ukraine wanted to be independent too, and look what happened. Greenlanders are definitely good at living in an alternative reality.

  38. Mr. Nielsen will not become PM, but rather Head of the Self-rule Council. The Kingdom of Denmark only has one PM, who is Mette Frederiksen in Copenhagen. The election is great news, as it will put to bed any "purchase of Greenland" rhetoric from Trumpkov to bed. Greenland will remain in the kingdom for many years to come now.

  39. The result of the election has nothing to do with Trumps interest in Greenland. The leader of the winning party has stated he doesn't want to be a part of U.S.A.
