Portugal Drops Plans for F-35 Citing U.S. Political Uncertainty

  1. Do we know what the contract cost was?

Canada’s F35 contract is worth almost $51 billion USD

  2. Everyone should join the British Tempest fighter program. 6th gen instead of 5th.

  3. Portugal has an F-16 fleet that isn’t in need of immediate replacement. My assumption is that they will eventually recommit to the program. Waiting four years for a new administration is less hassle than the years it takes to evaluate and negotiate an entirely new deal with another nation. I’m not an expert in military procurement but my understanding is that most countries take their sweet time when making multi-billion dollar defense acquisitions.

  4. Perfect! Every democratic country should follow this. Time to stand up against those bullies

  5. Has Donald declared this an illegal boycott of F-35’s? Maybe he should buy one.

  6. One of the few silver linings of trumps incompetence is he’s forcing Europe to get it together and become more independant.

  7. Canada will be following suit no doubt. Mark Carney alluded to it by saying it doesn’t make sense for Canada to be making large capital spend on American weapons.

Trumps bombastic behaviour sounds good for his base but he is hurting America badly every time he opens his mouth.

  8. If Donald decides he needs to make Portugal the 51st state via an invasion, having a jet with a kill switch Donald could enable would be a problem.

  9. Well, Russia has proven that last-gen fighters are sufficient to deal with their military.

Portugal can budget for other needs.

  10. This was based on an interview of the current minister of defense, he didn’t say anything so conclusive.

  11. Why would you purchase military equipment from the manufacturer that installs a kill switch. Crazy stuff

  12. USA is keeping the code locked on F35s sold to other countries. It can basically brick the planes if Trump had a hissy fit like usual. All countries should cancel any contracts at this point.

  13. It would have been funnier if they cited rising costs due to tariffs

  14. Americans made a choice that is in the process of rapidly destroying their country.

  15. I don’t blame them…whne the usability of the aircraft is dependent on if the sitting ~~President~~ Clown decides to flip the “kill switch”…

…because you didn’t bend the knee and kiss the ring.

  16. Remember when the Right excoriated Obama for trying to save money by canceling the F-136 alternative engine project?

  17. Serves you right Lockheed Martin. You donated at least a  million dollars to his inauguration fund.

  18. Next week there’s going to be F-35s at the White House and trump will personally purchase one showing how great they are.

  19. Given the fact that USA puts kill switches on them, it’s a bum deal

  20. “It’s all computer and it’s made of stealth, stainless stealth”

  21. imagine one day while flying your plane around for training the usa new potus decide to just cancel partnership and your plane give you a warning and after landing it won’t start up again 😀

  22. Trump was lashing out here and there …and that’s where Lockheed.

  23. As a Pole I can also tell that Right now there’s massive debate in Poland whether we should still buy military eq from USA.

  24. God damn Trumps got this economy booming. Great for business!

  25. Makes sense. Europe should be preparing for a possible joint invasion of Europe w/ Russia & the US

  26. This just proves that Portugal isn’t viable as a country and can only exist as the ~~51st~~ ~~52nd~~ ~~53rd~~ I’ve lost count, state.

  27. Excellent move. The US is a rogue state and not to be trusted. Well done.

  28. I’m sure the MIC won’t mind. This is what they voted for. 😁

  29. Arms sales are going into the toilet over the “kill switch” issue. Self inflected dumb-fuckery

  30. This dumb motherfucker is going to end the Military Industrial Complex and not even realize he did. /s If other countries stop buying US made weapons, that’s a huge economic hit. I think the US supplies 40% of the worlds weapons. It’s a crazy racket right? Selling weapons to promote peace but all it does is promote more war. I hope future generations figure this shit out, cause we obviously can’t. I feel like we are all on the Titanic right now and there is a group of people just enjoying the ride down and others in complete panic, and others are just oblivious to whats going on. I hope to god/allah/Bramha/Simulator Overseer that the rebuild from whatever happens in the next couple years is better than what we have now.

  31. If the orange idiot does a plane sales pitch at the White House….

  32. MISLEADING TITLE OF THE ORIGINAL ARTICLE. They are just postponing because they want predictability with an ally, nothing is set in stone they might still go with the f-35 they are just open to other possibilities due to the change of US policy towards Europe.
