In Greenland, ‘independance is clearly in the minds of people’ ahead of the general election

Greenland’s general election takes place this Tuesday, and it is attracting particular attention after Donald Trump’s recent comments about the island. Greenland is semi-autonomous and still has strong links with Denmark, but as France 24’s special envoy to Nuuk, Clovis Casali, explains, ‘independance is clearly in the minds of people’.

  1. American people would love to have Greenland with our country. It would bring a lot of tourism and strong economic support to Greenland.

  2. I would not mind if they became independent as long as they stay allied with the west if they ever choose to join US they would be Welcome bur if not it's OK US citizen

  3. Wow so this is what Trump is up to. Independence -> US' "protection" -> statehood basically the Texas playbook huh? If that is the case then Greenland will become a state in 100 years UNLESS the Danes have sth to say about this.

  4. Carney has just secured the Liberal leadership, the Trudeau replacement. Canada is due a federal election this year and it will be held earlier then expected. Canadians are furious with the Liberals and the NDP not strong enough to wield power. The Canadian Conservatives will take the win. UK, Tories and Reform are merging and they will force Labour out. Political pundits forecast a Canadian federal election before June.

  5. Why does anyone care to ask about the claim about self rule ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ stop playing into the self delusion, they have been allowed to self govern 33 fields since 2009, but can only manage to govern 3 small fields so only 3/33 self rule plus the mentioned fields, they might want it but they are to few people to get it, Denmarks parliament has to approve a vote before they can vote about independence and before they take over 33/33 and fix their economy there is no chance of even being allowed to vote and the US federal law says Greenland is owned by Denmark forevermore, try google how long that is ๐Ÿ˜‚

  7. As a US citizen, I am concerned for their zeal for independence. It seems that is risky. I viewed a mini documentary on Greenland and a citizen said that they thought they were better off independent for many reasons- including establishing mining in the north- and that other countries would likely leave them alone if they are a small neutral country. The people seem very nice but a bit naive. If the US doesn't take them over eventually Russia or China may do so due to their proximity to the Arctic and adjacent waterways. It seems they are better protected as belonging to Denmark rather than independent since an incursion on them would remain an incursion on a European country. Just a thought.

  8. Greenland is vastly better off still a part of Denmark then it would be if it is independent. If it is independent, itโ€™s going to have the United States, China and possibly even Russia trying to either an exit or control it in someway. My advice to Greenlanders is to stay with Denmark for another two decades until all of this blows over Because youโ€™re not big enough and you are not strong enough to be by yourselves. Not at the moment.

  9. When Greenland achieve impendence, US can colonize Greenland in order to stop US domestic and foreign land back movement by indigenous people.

  10. New Caledonia ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡จ French Guyana ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡พ Guadalupe we want to be free from France to!

  11. The entirety of greenland doesn't belong to either Intuits or Danes. They only own what they can controll, which is 20 to 40 miles off the southern coast, and the rest has been simply a no man's land, which US controlls for the last 100 years. US should draw a line close to the 20 to 40 mile line off the southern coast, let the natives onwn that, and claim the rest. No need to negotiations, no need for dealing with the Greenlanders and their independence, and no need to pay off Denmark.

  12. America uses $1200 per citizen in Marshall Islands. Denmark uses over $14000 per citizen in Greenland.

America often tend to forget its overseas territories as Puerto Rico can attest — harsh but true.
