  1. So, a fun story about Akseli’s work. I’ve been a fan of his piece, Ad Astra, for a long time. It sits proudly on display at the Chicago Art Institute which is not far from where I live. I’ve enjoyed the piece since before I connected with my Finnish heritage and realized the painter was Finnish.

Thus, I was quite surprised to arrive in Helsinki this past January and find it on display at the Ateneum across from the Helsingin Päärautatieasema when I stopped in there after lunch with my cousin nearby at Kappeli. I was certain that somehow it must have been repatriated until I looked online and learned he painted two copies! One, the original it seems, sits in the Art Institute of Chicago. The second, newer version is painted with stigmata on the hands and is on display at the Ateneum.
