  1. People don’t like to change. Even if it’s in their best interest. Pretty strange to see it again and again.

  2. From an educational point of view, this seems like a no-brainer. But damn, the timing is bad given the current teacher shortage and unpopularity of teaching as a profession.

  3. I’m a teacher that would like to see a shorter holiday. I kind of lose ‘touch’ after the summer, and so do the pupils. And the one week holidays are too short to get work done, so extending those would work great. I understand the objections of principals and the supporting team more than the teachers’: they’re often at work the first two and the last two weeks of the summer break, so there would be way less left for them.

What kind of monstrous job is teaching to need two months of continuous vacation to recover from it? I mean I don’t know what I am talking about, but still, find it very hard not to be skeptic.. Though I guess the low popularity of the job speaks for itself.

  5. At this point do we even want to attract teachers? because we sure seem like making it our best effort to chase away all teachers to other sectors.

  6. The propagatos’ arguments for the change are: it’s better for the children, especially those who already have problems keeping up.

The teachers’ arguments against the change are: we like it like that, we need to be at least 2 months away from the pupils, and if we can’t have that we’re quitting.

So research. Much science. Many substantiated. Such method. Very data. Wow.

  7. I’ll take that shortened summer holiday if they pay me the salary of a person with a masters’ degree, which they require me to have.

  8. Gf is a teacher and is against it for the main reason that during the 1 week holidays (Krokus en herfst), most pupils already forget too much of what they saw before the holidays. By extending those with another week as a compensation for the reduced summer holidays, she argues she will lose even more time on rehearsing the material from before the holiday.

  9. The endless discussion of which job is harder will never end.

It’s impossible to compare jobs (especially how hard one is)

  10. As a prospective teacher, I’d like them to shorten the summer holiday, while making all one-week vacations two week vacations.

I did an interim teaching job already and a one week vacation basically melts away into nothing with all the work I had.

  12. Scientifically proven to be better for the children, but of course we discuss this at the level of the teachers.
Just do it, take the gutpunch and you’ll see results in two to three years.

<Insert “Why won’t anyone think of the children” meme>

  14. **Never underestimate logistics.**

I know quit a lot of school folks. In reality the 2 months are for most teachers effectively 2 months, minus maybe 2 weeks preparation for the next year. In that respect having a two months break seems a bit “off the charts”. As also for the kids: 2 months seems too much. I agree on that.

But… do not forget the organizing staff in larger schools. In reality they have now something like 1 month, may 5 weeks off. Why so? They have to deal with the running off of the last year, this takes at least 2 weeks, and they have to prepare the startup of the new school year, this takes also 3, sometime 2 weeks.

E.g. when a school with 100 teachers, you’ll probably going have to replace 5 or 10 of them (retirement, changing schools, other reasons) mostly at the beginning of the school-year. When are you going to do that recruitment , first week of september when everything is up & running? No. This will we be done during the holidays.

In reality their holiday starts mid July and ends mid August. Shortening the summer holidays means for those guys literally having no holiday at all. It would probably ruin their organisation, unless… it can be solved (and it all comes down to the same), more FTE’s can be put in place to help run the school instead of teaching.

  15. I teach primary school, most of my colleagues would welcome the change. I guess it’s mostly secondary school teachers who dislike it.

I do feel like I should either teach less hours or get paid more in primary. Especially since I got my bachelor’s at a later age. My current pay really doesn’t serve as an incentive to keep this truly draining job.

The biggest thing people overlook is that as a teacher, you rarely feel like you’re off duty. There’s always more stuff you could be doing at home, because we don’t get sufficient paid prep time.

  16. My wife is a part-time teacher (12hours-20 is full-time) and she has more work than me (ft something else)
Emails never stop, late meetings (teams), constant schedule changes, correcting tasks, designing class material, designing tests and exams,…
Teaching is her passion but she’s really considering quiting it, despite the holidays off … Imagine!

  17. Honestly believe this kind of ‘news’ is merely launched to divide et impera and create a fuss. 100% of people here know this is never going to happen. Unionized government officials that are going to give in on acquired rights? Uhu.

Also teachers posting “I’m all for this, for reasons x y z” while they know with full certainty that this will never ever happen: we can see right through your socalled good intentions. No need for fakery.

  19. How about manageable workloads and fewer students / teacher. That is also in the best interest of the students. Also, maybe monetize rewards for people who put in (vital) organising work outside of regular hours. Why is it always talk of working more hours for the same pay? 🙂
Would you accept other people coming to your jobs telling you to do that without having the slightest clue?

Keep treating teachers like you all know what’s best for them and people will continue to vote with their feet. It’s that simple and still people here don’t seem to get it.

  20. It shouldn’t be shortened but distributed better. What they did in the French Community is fine. Also let’s get rid of fixing Easter holiday by the phases of the moon and fix that date so it’s the same every year.
