Hi all,

I’m just opening this topic as I’m very done with this “discretionary high service charge” in all restaurants that is becoming an allowed robbery and it should be stopped by the government.
I found a petition ongoing that potentially could bring a discussion in Parliament:

https://www.change.org/p/removal-of-discretionary-service-charges-in-restaurants

Would you care about signing and see if this helps?
If you have better ideas, please talk about it!
Thank you

  1. you can just ask to take it off if you don’t want to pay it, doesn’t need to be stopped by the government at all

  2. Change isn’t the site that brings petitions to parliament.

The old rule that restaurants held themselves to was that it was only required for large groups. Is that still acceptable?

  3. Why is this a change.org and not Parliament petition? Seems like if you want UK legal change this is the less effective way to go about it?

  4. If you want a discussion in parliament I believe it has to be a petition via the government’s e-petitions site (rather than change.org).

Would also venture it’d be dismissed on account of the chap who started it being called “Bill Charge”…

Totally agree with the sentiment though!

  5. This is not the way. You vote with your wallet – if anything there should be a push for more transparency of charges on menus or point of sale.

If with that information you still decide to order that’s on you. In the end, you can ask for it to be taken off the bill.

  6. Which restaurant calls it a “discretionary high service charge”?

  7. 100% agree. Nothing should be on the bill I didn’t order or confirm.

  8. I’m on your side, I can’t stand the service charge and tipping culture. The yanks can keep this custom for themselves if they like. However service charge is discretionary most the time therefore you can opt out of it, alternatively simply refuse to eat at restaurants who have this charge.

  9. This is pathetic. It’s not robbery, it’s clear and you don’t even have to pay it. Avoid places if you can’t cope with this.

  10. It’s discretionary. You don’t have to pay it.

  11. Totally disagree, but it warms my heart to think that someone woke up angry on a Saturday morning and decided to Make Their Voice Heard. This reaffirms my suspicion that whatever this is actually about has nothing to do with tipping (which, again, has been part of UK culture for a long time, except in this sub that has become an adult place space for people to scream about this subject.)

  12. I agree it’s high, but you can ask to remove it when you don’t feel the service was worth it, or simply if you don’t want to pay it.

  13. It’s a discretionary but simple way to tip for good service. If you didn’t have good service, ask for it to be removed from your bill. You don’t need a petition for that. But it’s kind of a dick move to not pay the 12.5% service charge if you’ve had good service. You’re not being asked to tip on top of that.

  14. It’s optional, just ask it take it off like the pickles in your burger

  15. Please make this a government petition instead!
