Jamaicans demand apology and slavery reparations ahead of William and Kate visit. The couple have already faced opposition during their week-long tour where villagers in Belize protested against their visit partially due to a dispute involving a charity Prince William supports.

  1. Rich people not being automatically welcomed to poorer places brings me such joy. It’s like the first baby-step to the world healing or some other hippy shit like that.

  2. If you listen very carefully, you can hear Mail and Express writers trying to figure out how this is Meghan’s fault.

  3. Portugal and Spain revving up their apology and reparations demands to the North African world for their 800 years of enslavement as we speak.

  4. I mean if any of the Jamaicans can prove that William or Kate have owned them I’d be all for them apologising and giving reparations to that person

  5. Oh dear, the colonial tour is not going well. They had to cancel their photo opportunity in Belize as well due to protests.

  6. I must say how heartening it is to see these two dancing & eating chocolate in the Caribbean while back here we’re all worried about how to pay for heating & Petrol

  7. I demand reparations from Norway, Denmark, Normandy and Italy for their occupation of various parts of Britain.

  8. I’m from a former colony too (although we weren’t slaves) and the amount of people demanding reparations from people who had no part in the empire to people who weren’t part of it is mind boggling.

The empire ended back in the 80s, which is 40 years ago. Even if you’re in your 60s now you were only in your 20s back then, and the empire had already lost almost all of its territory at that point. So most of the people alive today had no hand in the empire as either oppressor or victim.

  9. Fucks sake… here we go again.

Then we’ll demand reparations from all the nations who conquered Britain, enslaved or impoverished the peoples already here, impacted social structures and hierarchies for millennia, and raped, pillaged, and stole.

The Normans stole lands from Saxons, and changed the social structure of the Uk, of which still impacts people to this day in the form of our class system. The Romans took slaves, the Vikings raped and pillaged and burned churches, and the impact all the various invasions still causes animosity between various country/border lines.

    Blah blah blah.

    Next.

  10. They always say “jamiacans” or the equivalent to paint a picture that it’s a majority of them. In reality this is a minority position

  11. Do I get to demand reperations from North Africans for the Barbary slave trade yet? Or is mentioning how North Africans enslaved Europeans too inconvenient?

  12. So when do we tell them successive Tory governments have bankrupted us easily about 20 times since we extracted wealth from them?

I think Ed balls wrote it on a paper or something fuck knows.

Just makes you wonder how many times a government can spend an entire nation’s lifetime wealth out of existence till something really really bad happens…

  13. I’m wondering how many countries will rethink having a member of the royal family as their head of state when the Queen passes away. Can imagine a few places might see it as an opportunity to move on.

  14. What is the correct reparation for the decendants of people who were trafficked as slaves? Presumably dna testing and repatriation to their ethnic origin? Although seeing as if you go back far enough everyone is from the east African rift valley, so it’d get a bit cramped if everyone went.

  15. People really need stop getting their knickers in a twist on these reparations articles.

The British government wouldn’t pay for their own kids school meals during the pandemic. It’s extremely unlikely they’re ever going to stump up reparations money for potentially, 57 countries/territories.

There’s maybe 2.4 billion citizens of Commonwealth countries. What are we going to do, give them each a ceremonial reparations £2 coin? It’s literally never, ever going to happen.

    Edit –

Actually did a little maths. If we spent our entire tax revenue for one year, which is about 800 billion pounds (which obviously we can’t do if we want, well anything) it’d be enough for £250 for each former subject of the empire descendent.

Our aid budget is currently under 1%, so let’s use that as more realistic figure that we *could* give for reparations. Going with that we could afford £2.50 for everyone living in a former colony. Or £2500 for every Jamaican.

  16. Jamaica may be independent but the Elizabeth II is still their head of state and represents the history of British imperialism. Of course this issue isn’t going away until they step down from that role.

  17. For arguments sake, let’s say the government did agree to pay reparations, and we could actually afford it. Who gets the money? The ‘country’? The politicians? A new working group staffed by the same self-serving people already in power? Realistically the average Jamaican won’t see a penny of this in their pockets, and if they’re lucky they might get a token gesture like a statue, or a new library. The rest will line the pockets of the people who already have money.

  18. No.

I’m not paying for someone else’s crime. And there’s no Jamaican alive today that is even the great grandchild of a former slave, so they can fuck off too.

  19. In case anyone is curious, the dispute in Belize is about land the villagers have long been using as common land – collecting wood there, hunting and farming on it.

The land is 13,000 acres in size – about 20 square miles, equivalent to a square 4.5 miles on a side.

The land has supposedly long been privately owned, but there has never been any bother about the villagers using it in this way. The land was recently bought by Flora and Fauna International who are now prohibiting the villagers’ use.

  20. What would an apology achieve? Its clear that no one supports slavery and thinks that what happened is awful, but it’s not like an apology from the royal family would change a thing :/

  21. Demanding reparations for something that you was never part of from people that never had a part in it either is deplorable.

  22. Good the next step is to return all the stolen artifacts from British museums and return them to their rightful owners. Maybe even follow France’s footsteps when it comes to dealing with the royals.
