Hi, I was visiting Bruges for the day having driven from the U.K. and due to road closures had to take a different route out of the city than normal and a junction and direction I’d not used before.
So I was waiting to turn left, and all the lights changed to green. However the traffic waiting at the junction on the opposite side of the road also moved out into the direction I was going at the same time my light went green.
Luckily there was no one behind me so I just waited until it was clear and went for it while the light was still green, but I can’t help but think I screwed up. I’m likely going back in a few months so would like to avoid this situation again.
The street view link shows where I was headed, I was in the left lane wanting to turn left.

You turn left onto the leftmost lane. The cars coming from the opposite side turn right into the rightmost lane. I don’t really see how there can be any danger unless people start turning into the wrong lane.
It’s not entirely clear where the oncoming traffic would be in this specific case but in this scenario typically you would advance until about halfway, wait for a gap in oncoming traffic, then make the turn into the leftmost lane. So what you did is more or less correct
Or if you’re a keke you floor it as soon as the light turns green but for that you need a spoiler, a customised exhaust pipe and neon lights under the doors
I do that spot everyday so I’ll try to explain with this picture: [https://i.imgur.com/qzAttIH.png](https://i.imgur.com/qzAttIH.png)
You are coming from the bottom of the picture, just take the second lane.
Just take care of the bikes coming from the opposite direction that go across the street, you need to let them pass before you can take the turn. Just ride until the ‘line’ where you would cut them off and wait.
You did absolutely great! A lot of people would be impatient (or unaware of the rules) and would risk taking the left lane. That wouldn’t have been the worst thing in the world to do, but waiting until it’s clear, like you did, is definitely better.
