>“the actions of this Government and previous Conservative Governments over the last 10 years have meant there are fewer people living in poverty today, over a million people fewer living in poverty today”
The nerve of him to even try and spin that poverty is down whilst food banks and homelessness has increased significantly
Relative poverty is a bit of a stupid measure, because it doesn’t measure poverty at all – what it actually measures is income inequality (and even then, it is not a great measure of that).
Lets start with some background, the government doesn’t call the two official ‘poverty’ metrics absolute and relative poverty anymore, they are now called absolute and relative *low income*. Imo, this is a good thing because neither of these ever measured poverty as most people understand the concept.
The facts: the percentage of people on absolute low income has fallen almost every single year for the past 23 years ([see page 14](https://researchbriefings.files.parliament.uk/documents/SN07096/SN07096.pdf)), including all those years since the Tories have been in charge – something the left media in this country consistently refuse to acknowledge.
Now, journals like the byline times cannot point to any official statistics which show an increase in absolute poverty rates, so grasping at straws they instead use ‘relative poverty’ – which (as already mentioned) is actually a relative measure of low income and not an indicator of poverty. Refer to page 13 of the link I put above, and consider the AHC (after housing costs) measure of relative low income – it doesn’t move. After reaching a floor around 2004, it’s basically hovered around the same level around 22% for the past 18 years.
The only indicator which has ticked up is *relative low income before housing costs*, and so this is what our degenerate media cling to, they will focus on this statistic and totally ignore the rest. Then they will also seek out whatever 3rd party data they can get their hands on – regardless of methodological rigour, impartiality and transparency.
Reporting on this topic in our press is an absolute disgrace and the lay public aren’t well informed enough to look beyond the outrage headlines.
How many times has Johnson been censured by the official statistician for misrepresenting (lying) about unemployment numbers at the dispatch box?
This is what Tories do, they just make shit up because they know their base will lap it up and nothing will be done to set the record straight.
Conservative and their cheerleaders will now find that the old lies don’t work, poverty is too generally felt.
Conservatives got away for years with saying that Universal Credit helps people, most people didn’t know any better. Try saying that now and watch the reaction.
Of course they won’t be able to stop trying the same old gaslighting tricks, however they just won’t work now.
Is he actually taking the piss?
We’re at the point where a single parent with a kid on 20-25K a year will be heating their ~~house~~ shitty rental flat they don’t own to 13C and thinking about needing a food bank. Anyone below this is most likely a paycheck away from homelessness and even people on higher incomes say they’re feeling the effects.
If claims like this actually work on you you’re either unironically financially priviliged, or so blindly abiding by your Blue vote it is to the point of stupidity, or both.
“Ah see rate of death from lack of access to potable drinking water is actually down so he’s right!” – Tory voters, probably. Zero shame.
Is there any portion of the population that believes ANYTHING our government says?
If so they need a good taste of reality.
I love all these “well actually if you look at the figures, trends show relative poverty has been decreasing as a trend since WWI”
Yes – hence any government that cites that fact as evidence of their own success is lying, because it was already a trend, *it was happening anyway* so for any government to attempt to claim credit for it is to use statistics to deliberately mislead.
Johnson does it all day every day, Sunak did it at the last budget announcement, it’s bread & butter for Truss, Gove and Raab. It’s their MO as a party.
They do it whilst also voting; to remove UC uplift, against feeding the starving children, against support for the lowest earners, in favour of removing workers rights, against any support for unions, etc etc.
When people say “the government has no interest in helping the worst off” they do not mean they are *literal* cartoon Victorian villains with big moustaches stealing bags of cash – they mean this.
The mean consistently voting against anything that would even *alleviate* the stresses of poverty for the actual people of this country, whilst also parroting utter bollocks about things that were already the case *in spite of* rather than because of their actions.
The truth is (with the exception of Jacob Rees Mogg who has made cosplaying as a Victorian cartoon villain his actual job) they aren’t villains, they’re just cunts.
Nothing exists until it effects them, they’re just devoid of any actual empathy.
I wish to live in the lala land he’s currently in. Seems to be a nicer Britain than this one.
“Is it really poverty if everyone is poor?” – Sunak, probably
The fact there’s still poverty in the UK is disgusting, especially when you consider how much money was lost over covid payments that the government will not see to recoup. Poverty is just a political choice and the conservatives choose to allow it.
So just to be clear, can anyone at all explain why it isn’t completely illegal for MPs to lie?
Or does it come down to some bollocks along the lines of “protecting people who weren’t aware they were lying” , “how does one define a lie”, or some similar and effectively meaningless bullshit.
Ive never been so poorer in my life. 24, can’t get a job and living off £490 a from disability benefits. I hate my life and i hate this shit country.
Fewer people in poverty because their cuts and policies killed huge swathes of the poor. Stay classy Cuntservatives.
The significant rise in child poverty, while overall poverty remains level is very in keeping with Conservative policy. Support their ageing voters and deny support to younger working class people. This will inevitably cause huge issues in the future as the next generations have not been supported.
The impact of policies against children take years to become apparent and even more years to resolve
Is he on drugs, or what? Poverty is down under the Tories my ARSE.
What they mean is “We’ve kicked the poor further down than they were before”
Poverty is down because they changed the definition of poverty, which they did deliberately to avoid criticism for seeing poverty rise under them. Money just does not go far enough anymore and more people are forced to use food banks or go into debt to keep the lights on. There has also been an explosion in illegal money lenders. You can claim what you want, however you only have to look around to see that poverty and homelessness have gone up in the last twelve years.
LOL … seriously … do you all have anymore reliable reporting than we do, ’cause this is simply irritating to me but we know how “accurate” reporting is everywhere … not at bloody all.
Gov hides shite from us … but they will let us know when the EVE will happen, about 2 days before we are all dust and they have gone to hid in their bomb-shelter morgues.
Absolute poverty down
Relative poverty up
Sorry to break it to you all but this actually shows that trickle down economics is working.
If ever
People won’t blame them it will be blamed on Ukrainian refugees, the EU, immigrants in the channel or their classic line of blaming the last Labour government.
Less than 60% of the household median is relative poverty? So 60% of about £31000? So if you make less than £18600 a year? Damn, most individuals I know aged 19 to 50 earns below that. You’d have to be earning over 9.50 an hour to be on that much. The median income is quite high in the UK, but the modal group is on way less than the median. Plus, with the cost of living rises, clearly the number in poverty will have risen without their income as a proportion of the median having had changed. Just seems like a naff way to measure it. Doesn’t even take into account the difference in living expenses between those who are married vs those that aren’t.
If someone in a full time job can’t afford to eat, heat and enjoy life because bills take up 90% of their payslip and that’s happened more and more commonly under the tories then that’s a damning indicator of their actions. And that’s just someone in a full time job. Back in feb, I barely managed to pay my rent due to the nature of zero hour contracts.

And everything is going up. Soon, people will either have to pretty much wake up, eat a shitty breakfast, go to work etc… and come home, sleep or just generally not be able to be able to use their wages to enjoy life.

What’s next? introducing DWP housing to “Support those on low incomes.”
