I’ve had some friends over saturday night, and we had a campfire in one of these fire bowls [(1)](https://www.brico.be/nl/tuin-buitenleven/terrasverwarming/vuurkorven/esschert-design-vuurschaal-59x35cm/5405730)

We had hotdogs on sandwiches, and bananas in alumium foil. O

The police came, and told us to put the fire out, as it is illegal to burn wood in your backyard.

Is it really illegal to have a wood fire in your own back yard? They took my ID and I presume wrote down a report.

What consequences should I be preparing for?

  1. If you burn clean and dry wood, it is not illegal. If you burn anything else, including snoeiafval, it is.

Your local politoereglement may have additional rules though.

“Waar vuur is, is rook.

  3. Depending on where you live, on Saturday smog restrictions were still in place. No burning wood unless that’s the only way to heat your house was one of those. If it’s not in your municipal laws, maybe they intervened because of that?

  4. Maybe because of the smog alarm? I think I heard something on the radio that you’re not allowed to burn wood, only if it’s your only heating option.

I could be horribly wrong though.

  5. I went to brico on Saturday, and they had “braseros” for sale, so I don’t think making a fire is per se illegal (at least not everywhere). Also what about classic bbqs? It was probably due to the smog alert.
