Israel has granted exploration licenses to BP, the Azeri national oil firm Socar, and local entity NewMed Energy to search for natural gas in its waters, aiming to augment national reserves and broaden export potential. Utilizing data from the IndexBox platform, it’s evident that Israel has been enhancing its position as a significant energy player, particularly in light of Europe’s ongoing efforts to reduce dependency on Russian gas sources.
Joint bids submitted in 2023 by these companies targeted two offshore blocks as part of Israel’s fourth licensing round. Cluster I, a 1,700 sq km region in the Mediterranean close to the Leviathan field, will be managed by Socar with BP’s inaugural engagement in Israel’s gas sector. NewMed, already a major stakeholder in Leviathan managed by Chevron, will equally share rights in the licenses with its partners. According to Israel’s Energy Ministry, seismic and geological surveys are anticipated initially, followed by drilling based on survey outcomes.
Energy Minister Eli Cohen emphasized the strategic importance of natural gas as a tool to strengthen Israel’s economic and diplomatic influence, with objectives set on boosting production for local consumption and international sales amidst shifting global energy dynamics.
The eastern Mediterranean’s gas-rich waters have increasingly attracted global energy companies, partly due to Europe’s pivot from Russian energy sources post-Ukraine invasion. This activity underscores Israel’s ambition to become a regional energy linchpin, with commitments already in place to supply gas to European markets.
Recent reports highlighted a 13.4% increase in Israeli natural gas exports to Egypt and Jordan in 2024, underscoring the country’s climbing trade stature in the region.
