Got rejected from my dream university, but I dont understand on what basis I was rejected on. Can anyone please shed some light on what the following table means?

  1. It says there are two criteria for selection:
    1. Wartesemester
    2. Auswahlpunkte

It further states that the border rank is the last rank for which admission is possible.

For 1. border rank is 5 which is at least 12 Wartesemester. You had 1 Wartesemester, hence your rank is 220 of 391 applicants.

For 2. border rank is 22 with 84 Auswahlpunkte. You have 64 Auswahlpunkte which is equal to rank of 54.

In both cases, your rank is below the border rank of admission.

I‘m not exactly sure what the lottery „Los“ numbers are, but I’m assuming a certain percentage of students are selected by lottery, which you also didn’t win, as far as I can tell.

Sucks, but I hope this helps.

  2. Some spots are reserved for people who have “waited.” They ranked all of you from 1 to 391 based on how many semesters it has been since you graduated from your last degree (1 being the most semesters, 391 being the least). You ranked 220/391. Only the top 5 were offered a spot. 5th place had waited for 12 semesters and you waited for 1 semester.

The remaining spots were based on “selection points.” they ranked all of you from 1 to 391 based on your actual applications, most likely just your grades (1 being the best grades, 391 being the worst). You ranked 54/391. Only the top 22 were offered a spot. 22nd place got 84 points and you got 64 points.

The exact numbers vary each year since it’s a ranking of the current applicants. That said, trends tend to stay roughly the same. Improving your odds at this university would require waiting longer (several years) or increasing your points (only possible if they’re considering something other than your grades). Unfortunately, it is highly likely that you simply cannot be admitted to this program at any point unless you wait 6-10 years to qualify via virtue of having waited so long.

  3. Which university is this if I may ask? Could you DM me personally?

  4. Seems like a weird system. Wouldn’t they want people to go to university after finishing high school?
