Hundreds of residents were evacuated from towns in the southern Spanish province of Malaga after heavy rain caused rivers to overflow, triggering widespread flooding on Monday into Tuesday, March 18.

Footage released by Guardia Civil shows an elderly person being evacuated with dogs.

A later video shows an aerial view of the widespread flooding in the town of Cartama, located in Andalusia.

“The intense rainfall has caused the overflow of the Guadalhorce and Campanillas rivers, while around 40 interventions have been recorded due to the strong wind gusts,” the government of Malaga said in a press release.

Flooding was also affecting the neighboring community of Murcia, where cars were being swept away by floodwaters, footage circulating on social media showed.

Local media reported that at least one person had been killed and another was missing in the city of Sevilla.

The country has been experiencing heavy rains for at least a week, local media reported, with the city of Malaga under a “Municipal Emergency Plan” since Monday, March 10. Credit: Guardia Civil via Storyful
