  27. This is merely a tiny fraction of the corrupt and evil work the Trump administration is doing, but personally, this is a tough one to see.

    I’m white, and I’m not even American, but I do love baseball, and the relationship it holds with American culture. Baseball has a funny way of reflecting American history, and the integration of Major League Baseball is no exception.

    The incredible thing to me, is that baseball was desegregated almost 20 years before the rest of America. For almost two decades, a black man could not use the same bathroom, drink from the same fountain, or sit with a white person, but he could play baseball with him. Barring abuses from fans and other players, for those nine innings, a black man was an equal with a white man.

    It is a damned shame how long integration took for the rest of US society, and it is a shame that racism persists so virulently in the US, but nonetheless I think it’s a beautiful thing that baseball was ahead of the times, that something so uniquely and joyously American could be associated with such optimistically American values as freedom and equality.

  31. Just in case anybody was curious.

    Jackie Robinson was in the 761st Tank Battalion, a segregated unit (segregation wasn’t banned in the armed forces until 1948). 1st Lieutenant Robinson was on a bus at what is now Fort Cavazos and refused to move to the back of the bus. 1LT Robinson was transferred to another unit and court marshaled. He won, but still lost his chance at seeing combat.

    Robinson is a fucking hero who had his chance to fight for our country stolen by racists. He is exactly the kind of person who deserves recognition and admiration, even if you ignore his baseball career.

And how about all the blacks and women currently in the armed forces?

  42. It appears that the Trump administration is attempting to remove all content that demonstrates outstanding behavior by non-white people. I saw on the news tonight, that they were removing the history of the 442nd regiment, a mainly Japanese-American regiment that was one of the most decorated during WW2.

  43. If I ever hear a White person tell me in confidence again “We don’t really have a culture”, I’m going to point to these events and say “America has a history and it is filled with cultures; the reason that you don’t realize that is because of what’s happening right now.”

    Race and Racism destroy accurate history for a narrative that supports power and bullying. It demands that people conform to predefined categories and separates us from our cultures, languages, and their vibrant histories. If you think that America is boring, it’s because someone has been deliberately hiding American history from you.
