Trump halts doubling tariffs after Ontario premier backs down on US electricity surcharge

In the latest twist in an escalating trade war between the US and Canada, Donald Trump announced doubling tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminium to 50 percent only to halt them hours later, after Ontario’s premier Doug Ford suspended a planned 25 percent surcharge on electricity exports to the United States. This led to another chaotic trading day on Wall Street. Plus, embattled Japanese carmaker Nissan has announced a management reshuffle: Ivan Espinosa is to replace Makoto Uchida as CEO next month.

  1. People don’t understand that a trade war between the US and Canada would hurt the US, but DEVASTATE Canada as they’re only 7% the size of the US’s economy and actually have a trade surplus with the US. They couldn’t find customers in time to replace the 330 million consumers with one of the highest GDP’s per capita in the world. You don’t think Canadian leaders know that?

  2. Ontario has not "backed down" on the electricity surcharges. They are on hold after U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick reached out to Doug Ford, Ontario Premier, and asked him to fly down to Washington to "talk". If the US tariff on aluminium and steel are not removed, Ontario will un-pause the electricity surcharges, and is still considering stopping electricity exports altogether.

  3. Ontario caved to Donald Trump. They know they can't win the trade war. I see France 24 continues its Trump bashing. European media has lost all credibility.

  4. Ford stood strong. He makes Ontario proud. Howard called Ford requesting a meeting- “ cooler heads prevail “.

  5. Me debunk an American myth?

And take my life in my hands?

Where the Great Plains begin at the hundredth meridian

A generation so much dumber than it's parents

    Came crashing through the window

If I die of Vanity, promise me, promise me

That if they bury me some place I don't want to be

That you'll dig me up and transport me

Unceremoniously away from the swollen city breeze, garbage bag trees

Whispers of disease, and acts of enormity.
