COVERT TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WNDU) – The Palisades plant in Covert Township is getting a huge boost as Holtec International continues to work toward the country’s first-ever restart of a commercial nuclear power plant.
According to our reporting partners at The Herald-Palladium, the U.S. Department of Energy is giving Holtec about $56.8 million to help fund the restart project.
The funds represent the second federal loan for the project. The first was $38 million in January while Biden was still in office.
The Palisades plant closed in May of 2022. Never before has a decommissioned nuclear power plant in the U.S. been recommissioned, so this would be a first.
According to The Herald-Palladium, Holtec has not yet received full reauthorization to resume power operations at the plant, but the company has cleared regulatory hurdles so far.
Officials hope to have the plant producing power again by October of this year.
