Why Germans celebrate school with a cardboard cone

  1. My grandpa always tells the story that he never had one when he entered school shortly after the war I guess in 1945 so as a prestent for his 80th birthday we finally got him one.

  2. It is so ingrained in german culture that until now i never even considered if it actually is done outside germany.
    I guess not…

  3. I just became aware of this to me incredibly random tradition 🙂

I NEVER heard about it despite living next to Germany and having lived there for years.

  4. I think I’ve seen this ‘cone’ in Kinder-something commercial. I was wondering what is this thing and why all the children carry it. In Poland on beginning of school(and preschool) we have a ritual being humorous form of ‘accolade’ – when new students are tapped on shoulder with big pencil and they repeat the oath.
